I love Twitter. There’s something really personal about it that makes it my go-to forum for reading news, sharing, or just venting. Who knew 140 characters could have such a vast impact?

But, there’s also Twitter for real estate. You’ve read about the PR disasters following big businesses that tweeted something unprofessional. The fallout may not be as far-reaching for real estate agents, but making a mistake on Twitter could result in irritating others, making enemies, or even worse, losing out on clients!
My tweeter friends, steer clear of these Twitter twiccups:

Neglecting security – Twitter accounts get hacked every day – be sure you’re updating your passwords and scanning your computer for viruses regularly. Secure passwords with this smart tip.

Ignoring # protocol While it’s true that you can hashtag anything, it doesn’t mean you should hashtag everything. Hashtags are necessary to discover trending topics and categorize content, but don’t over-do it. Plus, you don’t want to waste time hashtagging something that will get lost in the Twittersphere, anyway – totally defeats the purpose. Save #MyCatIsCoolerThanYours for real life conversation. Taking a hiatus – Why bother having an account if you’re not going to use it? Protect your professional image by staying active. Looking at a page that hasn’t been updated in months or at tweeter questions that have gone unanswered isn’t a positive sign to clients who may be searching for you. If you know you’re going to be inactive on Twitter, you’re better off deleting it. Read my blog to learn how to make smarter connections.
