On the last leg of my flight to South Africa I asked a fellow passenger, and resident, if he had any advice for my sister and I before we embarked upon our safari into the bush.
Without hesitation he remarked, "Stay out of the water, any water no matter how shallow. Don't get too near the edge either." A few days later I snapped the photo above. Thank heavens for a good zoom lens.
The conversation then segued to Black Mambas and I'm not talking about Kobe Bryant. A quick map check showed we would be right smack dab in the middle of their habitat. The passenger went on to say they are quite common and as a matter of fact he ran over one on his way to the airport.
My sister and I raised our eyebrows and decided maybe our first stop would include shopping for boots. Later, at the orientation meeting our guide assured us we would not need boots as most of the adventures into the bush would be taken in a safari vehicle.
When buying or selling a home it's nice to have a professional guide as well. It's also a good idea to talk to some of the neighborhood locals. They can share the pros and cons of life in neighborhoods under consideration as your future home.
I can't imagine venturing into the wilds of Africa without an experienced guide. Likewise, the path to home ownership can be filled with surprises, questions and concerns. As my safari guide told me, "I do this every day." He's a respected and experienced professional in his field. And so am I.
