Points When You 'Like' A Comment or Blog Post - What Should We Do?

By
Services for Real Estate Pros with ActiveRain

give this guy a ten, he earned itSome of you may have already noticed, with the recent release, when you 'like' a blog post or a comment, you now get a few extra points.

8 points every time you 'like' a blog post (up to 20 per day)
4 points every time you 'like' a comment (up to 30 per day)

After this went live, it dawned on us that maybe there is a better way to do this.

The idea of liking a comment or a blog post is a first step in ActiveRain gaining a better understanding of what you like, so that one day we can start to show you content more relevant to you personally. It was also a way to get more people to participate in letting us know what content on the site is really great, since we use your 'likes' (which was previously 'suggest') as a primary factor is determining which posts to feature.

Whenever we give points for something, there is a certain segment of the membership who are going to make sure to maximize their point totals for any given day in which they are active on the site. And we love this!

But does awarding points only to the person who 'liked' something actually serve to surface better content? In looking at the data, it seems that there is this phenomenon where we see bursts of likes from one member in a time frame that indicates that they might not have actually read every post they just liked.

And that made me start to think 'are people just liking stuff to get their quota in on points?' and also 'how could we make a 'like' even more valuable for both the person leaving it, and the person receiving it?'

Right now we reward the person who 'liked' the comment or blog post. But shouldn't we also reward the person that created that awesome thing that you just liked, whether it be a blog post or a comment?

And then how to do ensure that members aren't just randomly liking stuff just to hit their quota for the day?

So we thought up a few different scenarios and we'd like to see what you think before we do anything drastic.

The First Possible Scenario

If you 'like' a blog post, you get 4 points and the author of the blog post gets 4 points. If you 'like' a comment, you get 2 points and the author of the comment gets 2 points.

In this fashion, the authors of great blog posts and comments get rewarded, while at the same time we reward the person out there who is letting us know what stuff is really good.

The Second Possible Scenario (Which, I must warn you, is a little more radical)

If you 'like' a blog post, which really means that you are voting this blog post as one of the best posts you've seen for the day, you would surrender a small portion of your points to author you just 'liked'.

So for a blog post, if you were to 'like' a blog post, you would transfer 4 points from your account to their account. And then we would give the author an additional bonus of 4 points. For a comment, you would give 2 of your points to the author of the comment, and they would get those points, plus an additional 2 points.

Why give up your own points to someone else?

The idea here would be to ensure that people aren't just liking random blog posts they haven't read just to get their point quota in for the day. If you were going to like something, and it was going to cost you a few nominal points, you might think for just an extra second before you 'liked' something. And, in theory, this transfer of points could actually help us surface the absolute best content.

Down the road, the surfacing of content based on your likes is going to be a large part of the ActiveRain story.

So, I ask you, what do you think? Is there a better way we are not thinking about? Let us know in the comments what you think.......

This showed up again as a new post -- is there a wrinkle with updating old posts?

Good morning Bob. I am surprised to see you but happy. I don't think that taking away serves anyone. I wish that the suggest function was back and the called shots were still around.

Adding a "Suggest" or "Recommend" button makes more sense to me than using the "Like" button to determine the featured posts.

Bob, Points, points, points. How about points for the group leaders? They really do a lot of hard work.

Content based on my likes? Oh please NO! I want to read everything the people I am following have published, not what you pick for me! And I also like to stumble upon posts... because I am browsing, not because you decide to show it to me.

It's getting too confusing... I'll like a post because I LIKE it regardless if points are involved or not.

Bob,

I don't understand the whole like concept.  What does it mean, did we say something that sparked their imagination?  I always wonder, what did you "like" about my post?  I get that on Linked In, and nothing else.  Should I thank them for liking me?  What does that mean?  Points?  A

I think you should do away with points for liking. What was wrong with the old suggest button? As for liking comments, why not just leave it at that, so if the commenter goes back to look later (I never do) they can see if someone agreed with them. Really, I'd much rather see the ability to comment to a commenter rather than having to say something like: "I agree with Joe (#65) and think also..."

By the way, I agree with Andrea (#211) - please do NOT sort content for me! That's annoying enough when we get ads based on websites we've visited.

Well, I was confused, I thought that if I liked someone's comments on my post that the person that commented received the points, not me.  I also thought that if I "Liked" a post the poster got the points not me.  Wow, I gave myself a lot of points I had it a** backwards!

Also, I like to read who I follow!

Hi Bob...I agree with Sheila Anderson...I liked the suggest and called shots way back when...I like getting points as well as the next person  but to me it isn't the be all, end all of being here on AR...I write a post and am rewarded with points...I read a post and leave a comment directed towards the writer and not 'generic' and I get 25 more...I guess I'm not a points chaser like many others...I post, read and comment to better the 'interaction' not to enhance my standing.

Bob, I like the idea of splitting the points when someone likes a post. I think this might encourage us to write better post and continue to build community.

Hi Bob, I think that if points were involved, then greed would take over.  I believe a "Suggest" works better and nobody gets anything.  It just gives you the idea of what people like.  As far as the comments,  I think that only the person writing the blog should get the points.  That way nobody has control of their own points.

Wow - I am glad I didn't read this when the debate was really raging - I agree that the second idea would lead to fewer people liking posts since many would hoard points

Good morning Bob,

Good to see your face on the blog roll!! I liked the "suggest" button..all this liking and points..takes away..sometimes I feel it's like Facebook..like a comment doesn't mean it's feature worthy!

I think if you read a post that you really like then you should like it and the writer should get the points, either 4, 6 or 8.  I don't need to get points because I liked a post but if I'm reading this right then another proposal is that I give up some of my already accumulated points.  Not so good I think people will not like a post no matter what if they wind up losing points they already have.

This point system is so confusing, I try actually not to pay attention on points but the way you collect them ~ is weird and it is changing all the time. For example, I noticed that yesterday when I first time visited A&Q, I got 25 points for a comment/answer. Today I got only 10 points. Go figure.....
