Making A Difference In My Community
Some of you know that I'd prefer to just do things in the community and help individuals anonymously when I can, but being a team player I'll forego all that and let you know some of the things my company @Homes Realty Group and I are involved in.
@Homes Realty agents annually participate in our own Make A Difference Day where we go out into the community helping to paint, clean, build wheelchair ramps or trim bushes, whatever is needed for those unable to do those things for themselves.
We also are sponsors and volunteers for Make-A-Wish Foundation Huntsville Chapter. The 5K run is an annual event we are proud to sponsor.
Another event we are proud to be a part of is visiting the Floyd E. "Tut" Fann State Veterans Home here in Huntsville, spending a little time with residents bringing smiles to all our faces.
We are also involved with Christmas Charities Year Round, The Huntsville Senior Citizens Center, providing lunches at the Huntsville Inner City Learning Center and tutoring at Lincoln School in Huntsville.
I actually prefer to help individuals directly and will pay for a lunch or breakfast or just give someone money who obviously needs it knowing that, that help is immediate and being received by someone I can relate to a face and a handshake. There's a gentleman in town that many know only as "Eddie the Can Man", watch the short video to learn mor about Eddie. Eddie walks the streets of Huntsville and Madison collecting aluminum cans from the road sides and sifting through available dumpsters and waste containers for those cans in good weather and bad. So, for my part, instead of throwing out empty pop/soda cans into recycling I save up a couple large bags full of cans and give them to Eddie when I see him on the road. Our conversation is brief and usually goes something like this as I'm handing him the bags of cans;
"Hey Eddie, I've got something for you"
"OK"
"You been OK?"
"Yeah, and you?...ya got a couple of dollars you can spare?"
"Sorry, but all I have is a $5 bill...is that ok?"
"Yeah...thanks."
"See ya, Eddie"
And off he goes...sometimes, if it's a hot day I'll be sure to carry some bottled water for him. In the grand scheme of things this isn't such a big deal, but to him it is and to me as well. It's fair to say that I like Eddie, what he does and his work ethic!
Just trying to make a difference in my little corner of the world.
