older personThree government programs can provide funds to pay family caregivers.  These three are:

  1. Self-directed initiatives under state Medicaid programs
  2. The veterans aid and attendance benefit 
  3. Medicaid spend down using caregiver agreements. 

Caregiver agreements must also be used in obtaining the veterans aid and attendance benefit income.  Consultants who are qualified to design and implement these caregiver contracts must be used.  This is not a do-it-yourself project.  The National Care Planning Council will be releasing a veterans benefits consultant's training package in the first week of April, 2008 to teach practitioners how to do caregiver agreements.
