History of a Painting, Jimmy's Hurricane,

Miami, Florida.

It's Sunday and time for another bit of history, from one of my past paintings.  This week, "Jimmy's Hurricane", is an acrylic painting on canvas. I was a participant in the Beaux Arts Festival, held at the University of Miami, to raise money for the funding and promotion of the Lowes Art Museum.

Acrylic Painting by Larry Johnston©

Jimmy Ellenburg, was inducted into the Football Hall of Fame in 2000 as an outstnding quarterback and halfback at Miami High School. In the three years that he played, he had a 26-6-2 record and two State Championships. He graduated in 1935.

Since I painted nosalgic places, I was told about a restaurant that was famous in the area, so I started doing some research.  After leaving football, years later, Jimmy opened up the restaurant at the corner of Bird and Douglas in Miami, Florida. He and his wife ran the restaurant from 1950 to 1966. The restaurant was sold and no longer exists and Jimmy has since passed away, but the memory of his football accomplishments and his famous restaurant lives on.

I hope you enjoy the painting of "Jimmy's Hurricane".

Hi Evelyn, I believe that is correct. I think the High School was also the Hurricanes.

Jimmy gave out free chicken dinners to the Coral Gables football team after every victory. The team bus would roll by after the game with everyone chanting "Jimmy Jimmy Chicken Dinner Jimmy Jimmy HEY!"Pioneered the fried shrimp dinner ($1.65) and the concrete roof is still mentioned in architectural text books as an early example of poured concrete artistic structures
