I hung up on 20 leads on Purpose! Google Phone, YIKES!

YEP.... That's what I did... Why:

I have been getting so many sales calls on my Cell phone lately that when it starting ringing with a recorded message prompting me to press 1 to accept the call, I just figured it was another sales call and hung up!

Okay, darn, dang, shucks, and...much stronger language now that I realize what the heck I was doing.

You see, I'm the old dog (62) with the 32 years of experience in the real estate industry. My partner, Matt, is a 30 something stud that has a complete handle on the new technology. We had set up a Google number to track calls and follow the leads. The Google number was set to forward to Matt's phone and had been that way for months. I figured the young guy has got to pay his dues and take all those night time and week end calls...right?

JC and MattAnyway, in July, Matt went on his annual family (all the guys) fishing trip in Montana and suggested that we might want to add my phone to the Google forward process. This would mean that the phone would ring to both of us at the same time and the first to answer, takes the call. We did this figuring that there was a good chance Matt would miss a bunch of calls on his fishing trip and, he was on vacation...

Guess I did not put two and two together...plus I didn't realize how many calls we were getting on the Google phone!

All I know is that this computer kept calling me and asking me to "punch in 1 if I wanted to....." and right about there I figured it was a sales call and hung up. Fortunately I only dumped 20 calls before I came to the realization that "this is weird" and I'd better check it out!

Here's the deal. Google numbers are great, just understand how they work and you won't be throwing your money away like I did.

I haven't ran into this issue yet thankfully.  20 people?  That's almost funny!  Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for sharing, JC. I'm not familiar with Google phone but would likely fallen into that trap, too. Low tolerance for "automated" calls...

Your marketing must be working well, to receive that many calls.

We use a google number for our office.  We have everyone on the line and whoever picks the call up first gets the lead.  LOL usually they're for our broker since he never puts his cell phone on his listings.  Occasionally to get back at him i'll give zillow his cell phone number ;)

I chuckled at this - I could see missing a few calls also.  Good that you finally figured it out before it was 100 hang-ups!

It's a good thing you found out where the calls were coming from instead of keep hanging up on them. Good for Matt too to have the foresight to set up a number where he can track where the leads were coming from. Analytics are the key to much of our business and at least you learned quickly.

I love my google voice number, but when I first set it up, I was wondering why I got the message to press 1 as well.  I guess I should have read more about it, but I was so excited to get the phone number.  I'm glad you got things figured out :)

Oh wow!  That could have been a really costly mistake.  Good thing that you figured it out.  The first time that I received a call like that from a Zillow lead, I hung up too.  Luckily the buyer tried to call me again right away and I answered that time.  They bought from me within a week.  It was a really good lead!  You just never know.

Maybe Matt should have trained his partner before he went fishing.

And now...you're grateful to google, right?
