Were you aware that many colleges/universities have started developing collegiate bass fishing teams? I believe this is totally awesome. I wish this had been the case 20+ years ago when I was in college. Evidently the year 2006 is considered the start of this new college sport and is catching on like wildfire. The sport of competitive Bass Fishing has been gaining strength for the past 30 years and is now known for being a large money sport. Back when I lived in Kentucky, I use to fish tournament quite regularly and really enjoyed it. It was a great way to build comradery and have a relaxing time, while at the same time being competitive. Today there are numerous competitive tournament trails like Bassmasters, FLW, Redman, and hundreds if not thousands of more spread out around the United States. Many of these bigger tournaments have big money on the line for the winners. What is "Big Money"? Winning pots that can be in the six figure or even seven figure range. The greatest part about these tournaments is that ALL the bass are released and not hurt. Nobody takes the fish home and if an angler brings a dead fish to the scales to be weighed, then he is penalized.
If you know of a college age student of loves fishing, suggest to them to see if their University or College has this sport at their school. If so, it would be a great learning experience and a lot of fun.
