Getting ready for Hurricane Iselle to hit Hawaii and Maui
By now everybody in this country has heard about the double whammy hurricane event looming down on us here in Hawaii. This may be a historical precedent, as they say a hurricane has never had a direct hit on the Big Island, Hawaii.
We have been tuning in to local weather reports and the Central Pacific Hurricane Center for updates. The first hurricane looks to be downsizing, which is a big relief, but the second one looks like it's getting worse.
People on Maui have been preparing, stocking up on water and food, filling up the cars with gas, and boarding up windows. We actually boarded up some windows this time, which is a first for us. Everyone I speak to is getting ready.
In our situation here in Haiku Maui we are always prepared. Living off the grid has advantages at times like this:
- 20,000 gallons of water on hand in 2 large holding tanks
- photo-voltaic system with batteries for storage
- wind generators
- back up gas generators
- plenty of food in the pantry and freezer, and in the ground
- a quad, a 4x4 truck, a dump truck, and a backhoe!
It's exciting to see these big storms coming, but it will be even better to see them going!
We are hunkered down and we are ready for anything!
Are you ready for anything?
