I spent Monday at a display honoring the 100th Anniversary of WWI set up in LaSalle Park. My husband and I decided it was the better part of valor to pack up our treasures before the rain hit. We had been watching the thunderstorm rolling in.
We made it out just as the rain hit. Little did we know that Burlington would get 2 months worth of rain in 3 hrs that day.
Tuck Creek which is near us over flowed that day damaging hundreds of homes. The city estimates that city wide approximately 2000 homes were affected.
One of my old neighbors described her ordeal as she watched a brown torrent cascade over her pool, into the crawl space and filling her basement level. She tried to stop water from coming into the main floor with sheets and towels. When the water started running across the floor and into the heat vents they knew it was time to leave. They waded out to safety because her car was lost.
Many people's insurance did not cover flooding. The normal coverage is $10,000 which is nothing when the damage to the home is over $100,000.
We will definitely be checking our policy!
I know that Burlington will come together and these people will get their homes back.
