Tibouchina, Tree with Purple Flowers

Everyone may agree that this Tibouchina, tree with purple flowers looks fabulous. It caught my attention when I passed through Bay Indies on the way to visit my friends in Mission Valley, Nokomis FL

Tibouchina – Description

This tree with purple flowers is native to rainforests in South America, especially in the country of Brazil. It likes tropical warm weather.  It may grow as shrubs, dwarf trees or large trees. When it matures the large tree height is about 15 – 20 feet tall. You may plant in the ground, container or in a planter as a specimen or border. The tree has dark green leaves about 4- 6 inches long, red buds, and 2 inch wide purple flowers with 5 petals and several white stigmas. It blooms between early summer and late autumn.

Tibouchina – Care for Tree with Purple Flowers

The Tibouchina tree is sensitive to cold. It is suggested to grow on the south western side of the house under full or partial sun, to avoid the strong winter wind direction.

Fertilize every quarter and regular watering in the morning or later in the afternoon to prevent the tree from wilting. Covering the base with mulch helps water from evaporating.

It likes well drained acidic soil to encourage healthy growth and blooms.

Do not over water to prevent fungus in the roots. Also, water less when we have a shorter day light or during the winter.

Plant the tree away from the house otherwise it will touch the building and provide easy access by insects.

Kwee,

Beautiful tree. It's way to cold in our area for this Tibouchina tree, I'm jealous.
