This morning I was going through old photos taken in the 1960s, when I came across this one below. I snapped this picture back in summer of 1967. We had taken a vacation, in the pictured GMC pickup, with a camper shell. The destination was Yosemite National Park. The famous Wawona Tree was one of main attractions in the Mariposa Grove at Yosemite. Sadly it fell over in early 1969.
In earlier generations, the Giant Sequoia trees weren’t as cared for. Outrageous things would sometimes happen to them. For example, this tunnel through this tree was cut in 1881 as a tourist attraction.
When the Wawona Tree fell it was approximately 2,100 years old, 234 feet high, and 26 feet in diameter at the base. The tunnel was 7 feet wide, 9 feet high, and 26 feet long at the base.
Recently, I had wondered what happened to the tunnel tree. Sadly, I read its fate online. I am glad I was able to visit the tree in the months leading up to early 1969 however. And I’m glad I still have this picture!
Myrl, That is such a great photo and it is hard to imagine trees that big!

Hi Myrl, visiting the Redwood National Park is on my bucket list. Would love to stand and look up at God's wonderful work.

I have to wonder what made people think that the tree would be able to live with that hole cut through it!

Myrl,
Thank you for the memories. I also went back in memory lane time this week. Somethings are just not replaceable. Living things, people should be treasured and loved every opportunity given.
I remember my folks driving us through the Sequoias and admiring the wonders and beauty nature presented to us. Life is short and we need to appreciate and treasure every minute. No matter how big, strong or tall one is ... there is also those times when they are hurting. I am sad to hear and see the great ones dying.

What a great keepsake! HOw lucky you got that shot and that experience. Reminds me of our great loss here in NH...the Old Man in the Mountain. It was like losing an old friend when it was destroyed.

I've never seen those giants in person - but I am always in awe when I gaze on a tree in my own back yard that's too large for me to reach half way around. We have a big Cedar by our hay shelter that caused one visitor to just sit and stare.
Unfortunately, too many of the giants have been mowed down for man's convenience and greed.

Sequoia trees are one of my favorite! They grow to such massive widths and heights. I don't know why the tunnel was made, but what a shame it was. I just wish people would leave nature alone! It was old when it had surgery. Probably added to its end of life. But what a beauty!
We had a tourist attraction which did not have a whole cut through it, and it died in a storm. It happens. Sitka Spruce

What a wonderful photo to have. I remember reading about this tree some time ago.
Haven't seen the giant sequoias, but the redwoods in Muir Woods are pretty impressive, even if not this large

Myrl, we see a lot of places where things would have been better left alone. Our Indians were great stewards of the land while white men, not so much!.
