Truth in Advertising means business cards, too!

Truth in Advertising means business cards, too!

O.K.  I dropped by me office yesterday to pick up my new business cards that had come in.  They look like the one above.  I'm not liking 'em all that much 'cause I'm not cute or anything and would rather remove the photo in favor of more "white space" and a bigger tag line, but I digress....

For the good or bad of it, though, I do resemble the photo on the card.  That puts me in rare company these days- judging from some of the whacked-out business card folks/actual folks combos I've seen.  Heck, I think some folks are guilty of false advertising!

Head shots become business card photos- so that's where the problems begin.  And folks, you know how old your head shots and business card photos are!  Hints:  if your business card shot was taken with a Polaroid, it's time to get another one.  If your business card shot is anything close to a "Glamour Shot" or has you wearing any kind of feathery boa thing, it's time to update that bad boy- it's the least you can do for the public, you know.

Gotten older since your current business card photo was taken- and you look older, too?  Get that bad boy fixed!  You know you don't want to show up to meet another agent whose seen your blog or website and have 'em ask if your "daughter" is going to make it to the showing, too!  Aging is a normal part of life- embrace it, don't hide it!

One can only pray the folks above have made a little trip to the ol' photographer and replaced these things above.  This guy and his porn star 'stache might have sold a house or two back in the days of Dan Tanna, Sanford and Son and the Solid Gold Dancers, but it's not gonna fly today, "Robby"!

And finally... if you're a woman (a real woman) with make-up that reminds folks of Twisted Sister and other "hair bands" from the '80s...yup, time to get that bad boy replaced, too, "Elaine".

Today's public service....done.

This is a major pet peeve. I look exactly like my photo. As a matter of fact, I was recently at my office meeting a buyer for the first time. I came around the corner and the buyer said, "I would know that face anywhere." Yep, that's me. No question about it.

Dennis, I remember the first time I met an agent who had a lot less hair than he had in his picture.  It had to be 15 years old or more.

Hi, David:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment and kind words.  The truth hurts sometimes... and folks' photos hurt sometimes, too.  Ha!

Hi, Tammie:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  You can carry this out a bit and make it 3 different "actors", if you will- how folks look on their cards, how they look on their profiles/avatars/other website photos and how they actually look.

You're rare (if I didn't know prior to my contest, I do now!), to be sure- and without taking an anonymous/secret ballot/pinky swear promise poll, there's no real way of knowing how many others here and elsewhere keep everything current.

I would say (and have a feeling you'd agree, though I never look to presume) that quite often this is less a matter of laziness in not getting photos/cards updated- and more so a lack of integrity.  When you put out an image that's not a true reflection of who you are- and that's the "first impression" you give, how can one be trusted past that?

Hi, Sybil:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  And I bet they were really proud of their card, too, right?  I should probably be kinder- who knows?  After all, that agent you mentioned might just be "thrifty" in finishing off the last few cards of a big ol' case of 5,000 that they got a GREAT deal on:).

I look just like that tree on my business cards!

Never quite agreed with the concept of advertising my mug on my business card, would prefer to promote the company that is represented by that logo on my card.

Hi, Bob:  Thank you for dropping by, and for your comment.  I figure it makes a bit of a difference for a lot of folks with regard to whether they're a part of a team or large broker like KW, C21, CB or whatever vs being a sole proprietor, too.

There's a big difference between promoting "the company" when it's a red, white and blue balloon and promoting "the company" when you ARE the company...

I assume just keep my photo off the business card.  You can see enough of it online.  It is interesting to see someone's aged photo and then finally meet them in real life and see just how different they truly look.

Hi, Rob:  Thank you for stopping by, and for your comment.  It was good seeing you at the Conference and Trade Expo, too- though I was a bit jealous that you were able to miss out on our big Sunday morning meeting and all!

It's funny as I think about it right now for the first time, but I'd say that the business cards folks leave in the Networking Area at the conference always seem to be current.  So... if folks can go all-out now and have current cards/photos (including the guy that had his cards attached to packs of gum), why can't they keep things current all the time?  Hmmm...
