Hawaii News Update - Aloha Airlines halting passenger service - It's a sad day for all of us.

Aloha Airlines have filed for bankruptcy on March 21 2008.  Its last day for inter-island passenger travel will be Monday March 31st.  They have been unable to compete with go! Airlines which were the new provider of Hawaiian inter-island flights of late.  Aloha Airlines, the second largest Hawaii carrier, has operated here for 61 years, currently with a fleet of 26 Boeing 737s serving Hawaii and six mainland U.S. cities.  Rising jet fuel costs were also a contributing factor to the failure.  Cargo operations will continue, and negotiations are underway with a Seattle company to take over that part of the business.  Aloha AirAwards credit cards are still valid.  Read more details in the Honolulu Advertiser Story.

Georgina, isn't that a shame. I hate seeing things like this happen to established businesses, it always affects so many people and is a blow to the local economy.

Georgina - the price of gasoline is making it hard for the smaller airlines to stay in business. it is indeed sad.

Oh..:-( And I just flew with Aloha Airlines in November.........Seattle-Honolulu - I took my family all with me for our first every all together vacation to celebrate my 50th!  The service and everything was awesome!  I am so sorry to hear that.........Now why couldn't that be Alaskan Airlines?  oops maybe i wasn't supposed to say that! lol

Debbie - It's a real shame.  This, the SuperFerry, and Molokai Ranch closing too - a lot of families will suffer.

BJ - These guys were #2 - I hope the smaller guys can hang in there... Island Air, Pacific Wings, etc.

Liz - Glad to hear you had a wonderfual vacation in Hawaii - I hope you'll come back again.

Aloha Georgina,

Unfortunate & sad. I wonder how much the interisland price war contributed to Aloha's demise?

Peace

I'm sickened by Molokai Ranch closing...

Other side to the story - they were very proactive in putting Mahalo Airlines out of business a few years ago when they tried to be the 3rd interisland carrier.  A lot of employees lost their jobs then too.

 What goes around...

Kimo - It's hard to believe.  Yeh, sad about Molokai too.

Barbara - thanks for commenting - there will always be somebody else to try and fill the interisland market

Hi Georgie!  I was about to write a blog about this sad event, then I saw yours.  I'm sure that all three of these interisland carriers  (Hawaiian, Aloha and Go) are loosing money like crazy with the rate war they are in.  So sad to see such a longstanding island business go down.  We knew that one of them would buckle soon, too bad it is one of the old island companies.  You know I'm nostalgic like that  :)

wishing all the employees at Aloha well...

Hi Karen! - I guess the price wars that were good for consumers have really taken a toll on the providers

This is not a good thing. This was the best way to fly out of Orange County, Ca to Hawaii.

Elaine - it sure is nice being able to fly to Maui direct, isn't it?  Maybe Hawaiian will pick up some extra routes now.

I really enjoyed flying aloha airlines. I thought they were the best. I guest the price wars took there toll.  The airline had such pleasure to fly.

Hi Bob - It will be interesting to see what happens next... usually another airline will step in and fill the spot, but who knows this time?

Georgina, this came as such a shock. I wonder how many passengers were stranded over there when all this happened. It's really quite sad and sorry to hear that so many jobs will be lost. No one needs that.

Gena - the other airlines are being great.  Hawaiian has added some extra flights and they are taking care of passengers so nobody gets left behind.  But how about today's news.... ATA is kaput... with no warning... there's some more unfortunate passengers who never saw it coming.

The saddest thing was watching the news....a pilot and his wife...both employees...were crying. crap.

Hi Sally - they had a job fair here at the Grand Wailea on Thursday - I think a lot of them picked up new jobs there.  I hope so.

It took a long time for gasoline price increases to have impact, but they finally are.  It seems people could only absorb the extra cost for so long.  Now food has had some dramatic price increases and the airlines either have to go out of business or increase prices.  The big airlines which are their competition doesn't seem to raise their prices though, so it means the smaller ones can't either.
