I Won't Crawl Under Your Home, You Have Animals Living Under There!
I consider myself an animal lover of sorts; pets, wildlife, humane treatment and consumption. I think we can live harmoniously the animals but there are some things that I won't do. Crawling into their home is one of these things.
I was asked to go under a home in Fair Oaks to look for the damage caused by a long term leak. This is not unusual for me, I work in dark, dirty, bug filled areas on a regular basis. But this job was a bit different then this. I noticed some things even before putting on my crawl suit.
I noticed that the access door was missing the screen, there was just a wooden frame. Sometimes the access door will be solid wood but this building was using the access door as a foundation vent for air circulation. The screen door is not too uncommon but it was missing.
As you can see in the photo, there was a trap right next to the opening. This traps are used to catch rodents and such who frequent the area, obviously there was a problem. I drove quite a way to get to this job and wanted to get a look and move on. I didn't have a good feeling about going inside.
Looking into the crawl space I could see activity in the distance. It wasn't clear what was under the home but it was alive. Openings to the crawl space can lead to long term habitation of animals for generations – it becomes their home. It has been my experience with animals that you do not encroach the territory of animals, they will fight to defend it. Scooting along on my belly is not a good position of defense and extremely dangerous.
I chose not to go under this Fair Oaks home.
If you have missing foundation vents either repair them or have it done professionally. Even the smallest opening can be an invitation to critters that do not belong in your home. There may not be a danger of attack but these small critters can create a lot of problems down the road. Be sure that all of your vents are secured.
