Blue HostI've been buried in a moving nightmare...Nope not selling my house and moving but moving our website and blogs over to our new server Blue Host.

Blue host has been great as I wrote in a previous post WP.org to hell and back but my old web host company has been less than average...guess that's why I'm leaving them.

Anyway it's been a long weekend and our main blog NewHampshireRealEstateBlogs.com is still not up. I think I have everything else pretty much under control, at least I hope.

I certainly have learned a lot in the last few months and now I'm starting to learn how to change some of the style sheets in WordPress.org

I know I have a long way to go but I feel I have accomplished a few new tricks of the trade so to speak.

Jay, I haven't even downloaded the update version yet. I think it will be worth it in the long run for you. Thanks, I know you're frustrated, Monika just said so on Twitter.

Hi Jay - I hope the rest goes smoothly for you.  I'd be choking about now if my stuff wasn't up and running like it should be.  Did Monika tell you that some of the messages I'd sent that included you had bounced back to me?  I'm guessing it's to do with your hosting switch....

I'll wait for a couple of weeks before I upgrade to WP 2.5. Looking at the support forum there are a lot of problems.

Ann, yeah I missed a bunch when I switched over. Not sure if I can retrieve them from the old host, but I will try.

How about that, Jay, you moved a key piece of your business and never had to pack one box or even leave home. Even so, it may take days before you find out where everything is again.

Jay when things don't work I pick up the phone and call a friend of mine who is very good at this stuff and he takes care of it for the price of a free meal :) :)

Keep your head up my friend, it will all come together.

Jay, what do you like better about .org than .com? I really, really need to do some work on my outside blog.

Steve, LOL you are right.

George, I feel I can call Mark Flanders if I need too.

Linda, the SEO is much better with WP.org and there is a lot more you can do with it. If I were you I'd work more on the outside blog too. I can't remember if you have .org or .com.

Cindy, it can be a litle tricky. You'll need to learn how to use FTP and move files from your computer to their's.

Are you moving a blog or just a website?

9:19pm • #14

Moving doesn't have to be a nightmare.  It just needs to be well-planned.

1) keep your domain registrar separate from your hosting company

2) if you switch web hosting providers, you only have to change your nameserver entries

3) keep your blog with your old hosting company until the blog on bluehost is ready; once it's up and running, change the domain name's nameserver entries to point to bluehost's nameservers

4) during the 24-48 hour window for the DNS changes to propagate thru the 'Net, run both blogs in parallel (you should be able to access them through a subdomain)

Hi Anthon, thanks I appreciate the comment. The problem is my existing company is down as they moved their facility.

I do have my domains with a different company and I am slowly getting there inch by inch or should I say file by file.

Marlene, it's not all that bad.

Thanks Bill it can be frustrating at times.

Steve. Best of luck and Anthon's comment makes the most sense.

We are back up and running and it looked like the .htaccess file was missing and Blue Host went in and fixed the permalinks which then created the .htaccess file.

It's always something, It's never easy. But, I wish I had heard from Anthon earlier. LOL

The .htaccess file can be a PITA, but it's the only way to partition accounts on a shared server -- that is, it wouldn't be secure/practical to give everyone access to the web server's primary configuration file (/etc/httpd/conf/httpd.conf).

Jay, I am just reading this as I only really heard (paid attention  is more like it) to the possibilities of Word Press last week.  Unbelievable, but so be it....here I am and I am learning.  Thanks for the lesson :)  It has been a month since your last comment so everything should be good now :)
