My Days of Wine & Roses... in Summerland, BC

Having moved Fluff My House! Home Staging Inc. to Summerland, BC just over a year ago I have had the chance to see many of the local award winning wineries with various friends. We have an association called Bottle Neck Drive that many of the wineries are located on with it's own map that tourists can follow to go on tastings.

We also have companies, like Top Cat Tours, that take people on wine tasting tours; my fb friend David Brooks is a tour guide for them. A designated driver for your group so to speak...

Being in such a beautiful growing region allows for a vast variety of grapes, fruits & produce to be available.

Many of the Wineries grow their own grapes, some buy grapes from local farmers & some use fruit for their wines.

We also have the Vinegarworks, that brews flavoured vinegars which are incredibly tasty.

I have been to the majority of local vineyards for tastings & am blessed with a neighbour who has taken the viticulture certification course (which involves not only wine making, but the sales of different wines) & has invaluable knowledge of wines; food pairings & what is a sipping wine opposed to a meal wine, etc. Many a time I have been to Sheila & her partner, Robbie's, home in the last 14 months & have had a chance to get an education as well as enjoy their delightful company.

Every Xmas the wineries have a special tour called 'Light Up the Vines' where visitors get a 'passport' that can be stamped at participating wineries that are showing off their Xmas lights, & every 5 stamps allows the person to enter to win a 5 bottle gift pack from the different vineyards.

These photos are of Sheila, Robbie & I at Thornhaven Winery where Santa was pouring!

They are two of the many things I am grateful for, now that I am here. They treat me like a friend/family member & have given me support, in more ways than one, when I needed it most.

They live across from me in our neighbourhood, so we often can exchange greeting while watering the plants...

I was also blessed with a spectacular rose bush at the front of my home whose beauty is only rivaled by it's fragrance. It is situated right by the entrance so you cannot come into my home without having the scent waft into your brain to produce a smile.

My rose bush   my rose bush   cut roses

Luckily it has been here forever & withstood the neglect of the years my place was vacant & the months I was renovating... Many of my neighbours asked me how the rose still looked beautiful without my attention, I think they were a bit crabby about it... but honestly if it lived through the years the place was vacant, it didn't really need any assistance from me now... Although I am watering it & placing banana peels for potassium at it's base... :)

Eventually I will be a bit more educated about the local wines, but for now I will just continue to learn from my friends & take guests to the different vineyards to see which bottle of wine I will take home this week... :D

Peg,

Your plan of learning about wines sounds like a good plan to me. I love wine I still do not know the difference between sipping wine and a meal wine but I do know that some wines with food taste much better but are great just sipping too!

Yolanda, I admit to not 'getting' a lot of what Sheila talks about, because my palate is not yet educated... But I'm willing to learn!

Peg-My oldest brother and his wife are more educated than anyone in my family but then again I am not a big fan but maybe next time I visit we could go on one of those wine tasting tours and I will find one I actually like.  Glad your rose is flourishing. Several of mine are but many have the blackspot disease and it was hard to keep under control

Peg, it sounds like heaven! All of what you have indulged in and brought to your "home" has all of the elements of home attached to it. Friendship, love of nature in your own visage, newfound knowledge of your community found through your neighbor's eyes..you have brought this all on by being YOU.

eNjOy!

Sharon; that is the whole idea behind tastings... They line up the current vintages & allow you to sample them.

You might like one vintage, but not the next.

When I arrived Sheila was head over heels with Thornhaven's Gerwurtztemener from a certain year & when that year ran out; was not as impressed with the next vintage they were selling, so moved on to a whole other winery's bottle... It was a revelation to me.

I am enjoying Gaylefriend *snap*!

And I'm learning:

  • about wine;
  • to stand-up-paddleboard (SUP),
  • to relax by floating in the lake & down the channel in Penticton
  • what it's like to live in a tourist town where folks are distracted by the view or unfamiliar with the area (defensive driving at its finest)

I also know that I can't even Not be me. It'll never happen, I'm not that good of an actor.

Thanx Sharon! I appreciate your kind words. <3

It's been an interesting year or so...

I have found I will get stuff done because there is no other choice & self reliance is still my underlying quality.

I have stated on fb many times that my friends there got me through the last year & it's true. I didn't have access to internet, so most of the year had made a personal hotspot with my phone & linked it to my iPad so I could post on face book, but it was too complex & I didn't really have the desire or the time to blog during renovating. (eating, sleeping & surviving were pretty much my priority)

I'm happy that I'm at the point now that I can think about taking the time to blog again & get my biz going here in the Okanagan. I just have to find clients, either Realtors or homeowners, that understand the value of my services.

Peg, so this is what you've been up to...visiting and learning about the local wineries in Summerland, BC.  Need any help finding a new winery? :)

Nick! The whole problem is; There are SO many wineries in this area. Literally hundreds in a 100 mile radius. You could spend every weekend going around to them & would not see them all in a year...

If you wanna come & help me find some of them; c'mon down! (or up in this case...) We can ride in the Z3 (offer limited to summer...)
