About Southport, Connecticut
Southport is a section and census-designated place in the town of Fairfield, Connecticut. Southport is located between the Westport town line with Fairfield and the Mill River. It has been listed as a historic district with the National Register of Historic Places since 1971.
Southport has a long, colorful history, leading back to 1637 just prior to the area’s settlement. The “Great Swamp Fight” that ended the Pequot War between the English and the Pequot Indians occurred in Southport.
Throughout the nineteenth century, Southport was one of the most important shipping ports on Long Island Sound. Known previously as “Mill River Village,” the town changed its name to Southport in 1831.
The oldest buildings of the historic district - some of them over three hundred years old - are protected by the historical society for future generations. One of the most beloved historic buildings in the town is the Pequot Library, built in 1887. The building is Romanesque in style and proudly houses a large collection of old and rare books.
Notable people live or have lived in Southport in the past, including: Author Anatole Broyard Jack Welch, former CEO of General Electric, and Ina Garten, a celebrity chef. Portions of the 2007 film Revolutionary Road, starring Kate Winslet and Leonardo DiCaprio, were filmed in Southport, Connecticut.
