About Silvermine...

Located across the three Fairfield County towns of Norwalk, New Canaan, and Wilton, is the neighborhood of Silvermine.

In the 18th century, there were 12 mills located along the Silvermine River. These mills also included leather tanning works, spool works, and a sawmill.

An old legend says that this area was known for a silver mine, however, no silver had ever been found. Silvermine, today, however, is well known for its history of art and is the home of the Silvermine Guild Arts Center.

The early 20th century sculptor Solon Borglum helped in building the community of artists in Silvermine and was one of the founders of “Knockers Club,” where artists would critique each other’s work. This later became the Silvermine Guild, one of the oldest art centers in New England.

This neighborhood has several historic buildings, including the Silvermine Tavern, a charming bed and breakfast that overlooks Silvermine River. Right next to the tavern is the store, containing many items from the area.

Nearby to Silvermine Tavern is Silvermine Market, a popular lunch spot for locals that is located in a 100 year old building.

Silvermine is a great spot to live in Southwestern Connecticut, with its historical charm and artistic culture.
