Though specifics haven't been released, the rumors seem to be confirmed. I'm sure you'll hear more as the day progresses tomorroPicture_2w.

The Wall Street Journal says:

"The news is a setback for the Bush administration and its efforts to combat the housing and mortgage mess. HUD, usually out of the spotlight, has been at the heart of the administration's attempts to ease problems for homeowners. Although Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has taken the lead on many initiatives, Mr. Jackson has been a partner on many, including programs such as Hope Now, an administration-backed industry plan to loosen the terms on hundreds of thousands of subprime mortgages."

Though this is certainly news, it seems a bit of an understatement to say that this is a "setback for the Bush administration and its efforts to combat the housing and mortgage mess."

America's home owner has been looking for help for months and months on end! And what did they get? Nothing but smoke and mirrors. Though Jackson's departure seems sudden, I doubt it dismantled the administrations saving grace from our housing woes. He'll be replaced and America's home owner will have to keep truckin' onward!

Anyone care to share their thoughts?

Ricardo:  Actually, I'm afraid to say I don't know very much about Mr Jackson.  I do know, however, that Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson and Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke have not been very impressive at all.  Not at all !

I think that homeowners are expecting too much from the government.  Borrowers that agreed to take out an adjustable rate mortgage should expect payment fluctuations, and now that they are seeing what the fluctuations can be they are screaming for government help.  The government absolutely should be going after any mortgage professional that has mislead borrowers, but the government should not just bail out homeowners when things go wrong.  That is not the governments role, and we must be careful not to put too much preasure on them for assistance, because we might just get what we ask for and regret it later.

Everyone always expects the government to solve the major problems. Everything from hurricane's Rita & Katrina in 2005 to the housing market. I have mixed emotions on this. First, the housing market has been fueling the economy since 2002, and therefore has kept America going. On the other hand, the government shouldn't be spending hundreds of billions of dollars to bail out the banks, however should be trying to help the homeowners who are in trouble.

Why is he stepping down, I don't think it will make a bit of difference, Bush will just appoint another of his inept cronies.

Get this, he's stepping down to "spend more time with family."

How's that for a reason!

"Inept cronies" is unfortunately a highly-accurate way to describe the Bush cabinet.  It's the most incompetent bunch we've seen in Washington since Reagan.
