Burying St. Joseph....A Tradition for Selling a Home

Tradition says  if you really want to sell your home quickly you should bury a statue of St. Joseph upside down in the yard of the home.   A special prayer is said for 10 days and at the end of that time, you are to dig up the statue and place it in a place of prominence in the house and continue  the prayer daily.  We know Realtors and homeowners alike who can detail successful experience with this practice.

The tradition goes back thousands of years. It is believed that because St. Joseph is the patron saint of home and family and  prayers to him for help will send buyers to the home.    Very often when we list a house ...there is a whisper of  ..."Do you think we should bury a statue of St. Joseph ?"   We say....whatever you believe in is what you should do.

This tradition was  very popular  in the 1980’s and early 1990’s realtors bought small plastic statues of St. Joseph by the case and buried them in the yards of their listings.  A priest friend of the family said he had blessed many of the statues for both parishioners and Realtors.

Sold sign           What is the right spot to bury a St. Joseph statue in order to help your home sell faster? There are  different stories on the placement...next to the for sale sign, in a flower bed, right side up, upside down, 12" down so it will not be easy to get out or too hard to dig up at the end of 10 days.

Statues are available at religious supply stores, kits with the prayer included are found in hardware stores and on the internet.

We suggest you call a Realtor if you want to Sell your home....in southeastern Wisconsin, Call the Hansons and if St. Joseph wants to help, that is just fine with us !

Joe didn't do the trick when Mickey's house was for sale, but I think the "sibs" may have had something to do with that deal.....

Will St. Joseph work if the owner is Jewish?

I'll need to test this out.

I would imagine that the flower beds of Florida homes are clogged with statues from the bad years.

Sally ,I know sellers that swear by this tradition. I laugh when I think about friends in another state that were selling their house when he got the news he had lost his job. At the same time an offer came in. They decided to take the house off the market to regroup. When they went out to remove the St Joseph they could not locate it. A year later they are ready to sell again and had to go buy another one and bury it. The house sold really quickly this time. I guess it was the double dose of good blessings from two St. Josephs.
