Here is a great website (and a flash video) that talks about the air quality problems in Maricopa County - remember as you watch this is that all of the particulates and pollution that are in the outside air are concentrated many times over in your home:

Air Duct Cleaning Facts

  • EPA claims indoor air has been found to be up to 70% more polluted than outdoor air (EPA)
  • Children are more likely than adults to be affected by polluted indoor air (Dept. of Consumer Affairs)
  • The average 6 room house collects 40 pounds of dust a year (Discover Magazine)
  • Air ducts have more germs than a chicken coop (American Lung Association)
  • A build up of 0.42 inches of dirt on a heating or cooling coil can result in a decrease in efficiency of 21% (EPA)
  • 9 out of 10 heating, ventilating, air conditioning systems failures are caused by dust and dirt (Louisiana Coop Extension Service)

Still trying to figure out what YOU can do?  Take a look at the website, make personal changes, and call DUCTZ at 623-262-3614 or visit our website at http://www.ductz.com/ to schedule an Indoor Air Quality inspection and service today

Wow, scary stuff.  40 pounds of dust per year AND more germs than a chicken coop - that is amazing!

...and that is in an average home (my wife hates the "chicken coop" comparison, though she buys the "40 pounds of dust" comment - it is hard to eliminate the dust and dirt in Arizona!)

I have heard aguments on both sides of this.  Some people say these are a scam.  It seems to me that you a re correct and they HAVE to be buildup over time.  I installed a blue light and electric air filter.  We have three zones and only one has theaforementioned setup.  What a difference.

Can you recommend anyone in FL?

Shoot, I deleted this by mistake!  What I wrote originally was that duct cleaning in AZ HAS been a scam for a very long time, so we are working to change that perception one customer and home/business owner at a time!  I looked at your zip code (and deleted my post...) but was unable to find a DUCTZ service provider near you - go to http://www.ductz.com/MainLocatorList.aspx?st=FL&lu=2 to find the listings in Florida for the provider near you (tell them I sent you)!  If you know anyone in Arizona that would benefit from our services please send them my way!

I lived in Scotsdale in the early 1980's and remember the air getting worse...it sounds like it still is doing so!  Yikes!

Vince,

Good job with the logo branding at the end of your posts!  The tags, too.  Check your "tag cloud" every once in awhile to see if you're emphasizing the things you want Google to see.  If you add StatCounter (free) to your blog, you'll be able to see who has visited, and even better, what the search term was that brought them to your blog.  Much Success!

Here's my post about Statcounter.  I'll go find the tutorial and be right back with that.

Thanks Mike!  The funny thing is, something must be working...I am getting a lot of phone calls from people who have visited my corporate website - those are getting referenced higher up in the google and yahoo searches (not sure why, but I would like to think my blogging has something to do with it!)

Diane - I have been living in AZ since 1975 - it HAS gotten worse (especially Scottsdale - it used to be that the "brown cloud of doom" only hovered over downtown Phoenix, but now it reached even into the Northwest and Northeast of the valley as well!)  Scottsdale, of course, has about doubled in size with growth, I think.  It is still a great place, though!
