On page 90 of his book "The Odyssey .... Pepsi to Apple" John Sculley who was at the time 38 years old and the President of Pepsi-Cola, gives an account of a meeting he had with Steve Jobs when Jobs was trying to recruit him to come work for Apple.  Sculley quotes what Jobs asked him at their meeting.  "Do you want to spend the rest of your life selling sugared water or do you want a chance to change the world."  This got me thinking of how this statement re-worded a little differently applies to us in the Real Estate and Lending Industry as well.  We do not sell sugared water, and what we do my not change the world, but What We Do Changes People's Lives.

We have one of the most satisfying career's any professional can have.  We have a huge impact on the  quality of life of others.  We change lives by making the American Dream come true for families.  The look on the face of a Buyer, especially a First Time Homebuyer as they take possession of the keys to their new home is priceless, and we make that happen.

It is a dream they continue to look to us to help them continue to happen as their family grows.  As the circumstances of their lives change we remain a part of change in their lives and grow with them.  We are the one they look to in helping them make future decisions on their property, as well as assist them with the purchase of future homes for their family.

We do not sell suggared water, but we do make dreams come true.  What WE Do Changes People's Lives.

George, this is very eloquent.  We do change people's lives and maybe because of that we put up with everything that goes along with it.  Selling sugared water sounds pretty easy in comparison!

Absolutely agree, George. While we're all in this business to earn a living and provide for our families, some of us are in it for far more than that: to see the excited look on a client's face as they see "THE house" for the first time; the joy they feel when they sign the contract and hold the keys in their hand; the handshakes and hugs (and tears, too) that mark the culmination of the long home buying journey; and the memories and friendships that result from it all. We may not be changing the world, but we sure are making somebody's dreams come true, every single day, and we wouldn't have it any other way

Ginny Gorman I think Jobs was forced out.  Scully kind of screwed the company up then Jobs came back.  I do not remember first hand, but Jobs was young and a visionary but may have lacked some business sense.  But when he came back he had.  He consolidated a lot of different products and revolutionized computers again, with the iMacs, the iPods, and the of course the iPhones.

Interesting post and perspective, yet I don't believe that a Realtor's services changes peoples lives. Parents, educators, mentors and coaches do it consistently, some very good and some poorly.
