Do You Know About the Recluse Spider...Read On.

Recluse spider also Known as Fiddleback Spider

Be careful not to get near spider infested areas as the bite can be deadly. Everyone is familiar with the black widow but the recluse is just as serious.

The bite of the brown recluse spider is often not immediately painful, although a slight stinging sensation may be felt. If you can catch the spider, keep it to be identified by professionals. Symptoms include chills, fever, bloody urine, fatigue, jaundice, pain in the joints, nausea, rash, and in extremely rare cases, convulsions and death. The amount of damage depends on the amount of venom injected. The damaged area may be the size of a dime or as large as 20 centimeters in diameter. Healing is slow and scar tissue results from the wound. Healing may take six to eight weeks or require up to a year if the wound is large.

The recluse spider

Just practice safe procedures when removing trash and piled up cans and cleaners in the garage and outside. The recluse spider can cause damage to your flesh and many months of recovery. Check and see if this spider is prevalent in your state.

This is a pretty common pest down here in Florida. Nasty bites from these can cause a lot of problems!

I try to keep my home free of spiders, but this spring I was inundated by Black Widows.  Some of them were quite large.  I did manage to get them under control, but spiders give me the creeps.  I understand that Recluse Spiders are more dangerous than Black Widows.

I stay away from spiders!  Yuck.  I think I'm going to start wearing gloves to go get the paint cans after watching the video. Ick.

Thanks Kristin, I'm pretty sure we have this spider here.  As a rule, I like to stay away from spiders but it may be a good idea to work with gloves in the garden.

I got a spider bite about 7 years ago.  My foot blew up like a balloon and I suffered for over 3 months.  Spiders are not my favorite insect.

I have had the pleasure of spending the night on IV antibiotics in a hospital from a brown recluse bite.  This happened in a construction home and I imagine the spider came in with materials.  It was on my heel and felt and looked like a blister.  What I have found is I am so much more careful now about putting myself in areas where they may be hiding.  Gloves are a great thing to use when moving boxes that have been sitting.  Remember stuff coming out of attics often where brown recluse spiders are hiding........

Great post.

Hi Wayne- It is a creepy spider and pretty small to do so much damage.

Hi Debbie- You can Google it to see. Sometimes they are not native but can come in packages being shipped there.

Hi Amanda and Jared- I am the same way as I try to stay away from all spiders.

Hi Gary- Yes they can really mess you up for a year or more or be fatal.

Hi Kristin- I am the same but I do like lady bugs and love to photograph bees.

Hi Richard and Beth- We have them too as we hate finding spiders in our garage.

Hi Sheila- Glad I could share some valuable information. The interesting thing is they are not scary looking like black widows but just as deadly if not more.

Hi Sharon- That is good news that they are not in New Hampshire.

Hi Paul- Glad I could be of service. These spiders are small but bad news.

Hi Myrl- Yes and not as creepy looking either. I  hate all spiders.

Hi Kat- That is a great idea. You never know what is lurking behind those cans.

Hi Silvia- I start out gardening with gloves but after a few hours and full of mud, I tend to remove them which is definitely not a good idea!

Hi Joan- Yes unfortunately you know first hand. My husband kept getting bit and we must have bombed our house 3 or 4 times as the exterminator just couldn't find it. I never did but I read people who wear cologne and fragrances are least likely to be bit. I kept spraying my pillow with Bath and Body Mists to detur them from my side of the bed.

Hi Larry- Not a creepy as snake bite videos but I totally understand. Staying away is the important thing and wearing gloves.

Hi Julie- I did not put the medicaldetails in the written part of my post but that is what they said; starts out like a small blister. Sorry you were bitten and glad you recovered.

I have never heard of this type of spider but we have many spiders in this area, especially when it is humid-I need to shake out my closed toe shoes and boots and get out the vacuum.  Thank you for the warning.

Hi Joanna,

Yes as you never know. I sometimes see those crab spiders that I think are  harmless but very ugly and scary.
