I must have found my calling because I truly enjoy teaching. I think what I enjoy most is meeting and getting to know so many different people. Every month I teach a pre licensed real estate class and although each class is different in so many ways, it always amazes me how the class bonds before the week is over.
Our real estate class brings in all walks of life at all ages. We’ve had students who sleep in their car, doctors, lawyers, hairdressers, makeup consultant, hotel managers, car salesmen, farmers, teachers, ministers and more. We also get students who are from other countries with strong language barriers to work through. In spite of the diversity, every student has the same purpose for being here.
On the first day of class everyone is quiet and reserved. I like to loosen things up by first introducing myself and letting them know a little about me. Then we go around the room and each student stands and tells a little something about themselves like, who they are, where they are from, what they do, and what their goals are.
Very rarely does anyone know anyone else unless it’s a spouse. By the next day and as the week progresses, the students become more and more comfortable with me and with each other. Everyone starts asking questions, interacting with one another and going to lunch together.
As the week goes by you can see the class coming closer and closer together. The proud, and the know it all’s quickly come down to earth. The meek and the lowly speak up and make jokes. It’s amazing how a room full of laughter brings a group together.
On the last day, you can see emails, phone numbers and hugs being exchanged, as they wish each other luck on the final exam. Not everyone finishes the exam at the same time and those who do finish are asked to wait outside the door for me to bring them their results.
After passing the exam and getting their certificate, you would think one would be eager to get out of there. Instead of going home, most of the students who finish their test early patiently wait outside the door in support for those who are still testing. I have seen students wait for the very last person to finish.
Even though most of them may never see one another again, for that one week eveyone comes together on common ground, forming friendships and memories that are only the beginning of what lies ahead.
Until we meet again,
~Captain Wayne
