Wordless Wednesday - Maybe Your Last Day of Summer '14

By

This post may be appreciated by anyone but especially those who strap on their Churchill's and head out for BIG waves.  I had enjoyed a 6 mile journey along the Jersey coast when Hurricane David appeared in the early 80's and also in Cape Hatteras where rides of more than two minutes over two sandbars with 18 foot perfectly formed waves.  They had a similar drop such as that depicted here and despite deeper water the bottom was the only safe place to be during a Wipeout.  This looks like "The Wedge" which is on my bucket list however if I went there today it would be the last entry and someone else wiuld have to check it off for me!   Another hot spot when it's cranking is nearby Sebastion Inlet.  It's not so much the waves that get you but the surfers who might crowd you out there.

Grant, there was a time when I would be out there 8 hours at a time. Today a 1 hour session would be pushing it.

Alexandra, I'll add seeing you both in Carpinteria when this trip rolls around then I can have a twofer scratched off the list.  Carpinteria Ave. to Newport Blvd. is only 125 miles, driving the 405 was not on my bucket list though!

CA is getting hammered Roy.  We see some head high waves nearby that are much more manageable.

Big waves and big excitement is in the air for surfer dudes and dudettes. I'd be pretty fearful of "The Wedge," especially right now. However, I do applaud your adventuresome spirit.

Debb, in big surf I'll usually take my time analyzing conditions before jumping in.  Water has always been my best element.

Lou, it's not only Summer but all the seasons changing tides too quickly.  They're here then, almost in an instant, already gone.
