Toilet in a phone booth!

I SWEAR this toilet is "functional" although just stating that it "flushes" is probably more accurate.  It isn't just sitting there.  It is another one of those great mysteries as to how it got to be this way.  Who decided this was OK?  Did they try it out?  Even boys would have a hard time using this.  (Could explain the condition of the floor.)  Why aren't there butt marks (or knee marks) on the wall?  And how about the tank---is it about to break off?

Perhaps stirrups could be installed to make mounting the thing easier----this is the Wild-Wild-West after all.  Then again, perhaps it is meant to be ridden "side-saddle?"  Hey!---I am a guy---I don't do side saddle.toilet

Even though the tank would still have been too far from the wall if it backed up under the window---it would have been more "functional."

25 Comments on Toilet in a phone booth!

My guess is that it was originally installed with the tank next to the window - looks like there would be enough room!

Charlie--I think it is a center piece--a bathroom centerpiece!  Or a conversation piece.

I showed one where the half bath was in the laundry room... as in you walked into a laundry room, washer/dryer against one wall, sink against a wall, and then BOOM, the toilet was slap dab in the middle of the room - kid you not! It was crazy.

Pamela, my guess is---not thinking:)

Vince, it is really hard to say because the tank would have still been just as far from the wall.

Christopher, while not one to pass up an opportunity to slam an architect---I really don't think this one ever saw one:)

Leslie, well it certainly is a "focal" point

Sheree, sounds like someone forgot the walls:)

Charlie,

Afraid I have seen some phone booths that were toilets. Not what you got there though.

Charles- That is one of those rotating toilets - you know - to challenge the men at the fairgrounds. Someone was just lazy and didn't want to move the waste pipe. Typical. - Ray

Steve, very funny---but so true

Ray, how could I have missed that!  You are so right---the revolving toilet!

Charles, With stuff like this, we will NEVER run out of things to write about. Too Funny!

Hey, just rotate it 90degrees clockwise, and presto, a great view out the window, or, moon your neighbors when you like a leak.  Multi functional, ya know.

Michael, I think home inspections are the perfect blog fodder job

David, I like the "view out the window" idea.  Then you could do one of those running vaulting approaches from behind to mount the thing---better put one of thse cushy seats on it though:)

You've never seen one of those Charles?  It's called the "diet bathroom."  If you're at your ideal weight you fit in there just right.  Don't you take any continuing education?   :-)

Joseph, I am "flushed" with embarrassement that I didn't catch that CE course:)

hhhmm, That would be a difficult toilet to sit at. I've never seen anything like that, what were they thinking. They would have been better off putting one of the squatter toilets in there like they use in China.....although one of those may not even fit.

Oh dear!  I don't have a builder's license and wonder what builder could possibly think that is okay (if in fact that was done by a builder).  Pretty crazy!

Looks like a knee bruiser, or a total miss in the dark, would suggest wood strapping or a bungee cord to stabilize that tank.. nice picture thanks for sharing, will forward to my plumber as a "not the way to do it" photo..

04/02/2008 08:08 AM by Steve Loynd, Alpine Lakes Real Estate Inc., Loon Mt, NH.

Sean, I like the idea of a squat toilet:)

Derek, builders aren't "really" licensed here---believe it or not

Steve, "bungee cord"?----I was thinking duct tape:)

That is a very good find Charlie.

Looks like it is time for a gold star.

Bob, was harder to "miss" than "find":)  Reminds me of Nicholas Cage's line in Barfly, "If there is one thing I can't stand it is obviousness."

I was thinking about remodeling my closet and now I have a new idea so thanks for the tip :)

04/30/2008 06:54 PM by John LeBaron (Chimney Check Professionals)

John, Lot of closets under stairs in older homes seem to get turned into powder rooms

05/02/2008 09:41 PM by Charles Buell, Seattle, WA, Home Inspector (Charles Buell Inspections.com)

Haha. Thats crazy I have never seen such a small bathroom if thats what you would call it?

05/03/2008 03:32 AM by Andy Laughlin (ConnectRealty.com)

My guess is that this origionally a 14 inch rough on the plumbing that has now been replaced with a 12 inch rough toilet.  Hence the tank far from the wall.  There are actually codes about clearance around toilets and this does not meet them.

05/17/2008 11:01 AM by Dana Bostick (True Professionals, Inc.)

Andy, I see lots of small powder rooms---but this one was pretty small.

Dana, I don't think two inches would even get the toilet tank against the wall. Doubtful the installation ever saw a "code" inspector:)
