Every time I go to the supermarket lately, I become angry.  Every thing is so expensive.  Especially the meat department.  Every thing is pre-cut, pre-packaged and expensive. It seems like i get half of what I really wanted.  I wonder how young families can get by.  I remember when I was feeding a family how I cooked.  We ate very well, and there was always someone extra at the table, a school or family friend.   Every Sunday you ate a roast, a Monday night it was left over roast in a stir fry, Every time I go to the supermarket in the last 3 months, I leave upset, angry and with half of the groceries I really wanted to buy. Or it seems so.  What makes me the angriest in the market is the meat department.  Everything is now sold in parts, and these parts have become very expensive.  Take the good old staple, chicken.  A mother could feed her family twice, and maybe three times on a chicken if she bought  them whole and about 5/6 lbs.  To start with, a 6 pound chicken would cost about 69 cents a pound.  So for about $ 4.20, you could have two good meals, and stock to make a soup with.  You would bone it out and cut it into enough servings for a family of 4 to eat twice.   The first time you could roast the whole chicken.  The next day with the leftover, you could make a cream chicken with vegetable on rice.  The third day, you would boil the chicken carcass and get broth.  With this broth you could make a chicken vegetable soup, or a chicken a rice soup.  Soup is the greatest thing to have in your home.  If there is soup available, kids come home after school and have a cup and then a snack.  Cuts down the ravenous eating at the dinner table. This is how mothers served their families meals that were nutritious.  Now everything is pre-packaged and the prices are out of sight.  The merchant can say that the cost of gas and the cost to feed animals has risen and so forth.  But, that is not the only reason.  The merchants are taking advantage of the parents who are either working until late, or taking their children to sports, or whatever.  Easy means expensive.  So for those of you who are still trying to eat well while saving for the American Dream, your own house.  I suggest you make a good shopping list, shop on a day when you have some time to prepare the food for the coming week.Put it away for the week and be prepared.  I know this probably seems like a unlikely topic to speak about when we are really talking about real estate and buying a home.  But it is not.  Every one wants a beautiful kitchen.  Yes, so do I, but lets start using them to their full use.  Cook, feed your family, and save.
