Tree Removal Permits in Gaithersburg

If your late summer or early fall yard clean up plans call for the removal of a tree or two, this blog is for you.  The severe winter weather created an unusually high level of damage to trees and shrubbery. You may wish to remove or replace some trees that are damaged or that now pose a risk during the hurricane season.

Please be aware of the requirement to obtain a permit to remove trees within the City of Gaithersburg.

This is the Tree Removal notice from the City:

To protect and preserve our urban tree canopy, the City of Gaithersburg requires residents to obtain a permit to remove, top or relocate a tree whose trunk is more than 2 inches in diameter when measured 4 inches up from the ground. Once the permit is received, a laminated sign will be provided to be staked on the property, so neighbors will know that permission has been granted. If you are concerned about trees being removed from private property without City permission, please contact the City's Neighborhood Services Division atneighborhoods@gaithersburgmd.gov or call 301-258-6340 during regular business hours. Read more here.

For out of the area readers, the City of Gaithersburg is located in the heart of Montgomery County, Maryland in the western suburbs of Washington, DC.

I do like the idea of getting a permit for tree removal. Here it is the wild west of tree cutting where permits are not needed and trees often fall on wires, streets or neighbors fences,. We too have lots of storm damaged trees from 5 years of crazy storms, hurricanes and ice storms. Have a good day

I had never thought about having to get a permit to remove trees.  It makes a lot of sense.  We had a tree removed last summer and it was very costly. It was sick, we had spent a lot of money trying to save it but could not.

This is happening so much in many parts of the country Roy. Best to get a permit and do it safe and the right way. Do not get a fine from the city and follow the correct procedures.

Roy, that is awful strict to have a permit to remove a tree that is just over 2 inches in diameter!!!  I guess you better watch those sucker shoots and weed trees that grow so quickly near your foundation and lop them off before they get  two inches in diameter!!!  (about the size of a silver dollar!!!)
