Labor Day Weekend in Old Sacramento

By
Real Estate Agent

I can usually place myself in the midst of any activity, and have a great time.  When word came out a few weeks ago, that Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento was canceled this year, because of our drought, I was disappointed.  However, I knew multiple tons of dirt placed on cobblestone streets, required regular water truck visits to keep dust down, and the cleanup required afterward, couldn't be justified, while California dwells in severe drought.

When a few days after the cancellation, it was announced Old Sacramento would host "Americana in Old Sacramento," in hopes of alleviating the loss of Gold Rush Days, I was on-board.  I hoped there would be a full venue of activities, even if sans dirt on the cobblestones.

This morning I spent a couple hours in Old Sacramento, waiting for something to happen.  Alas, nothing came close to even my mildest expectations.  I came away thinking, how can I put a positive spin on that!

On the local news this evening, even store and business owners in Old Sacramento were down on this holiday weekend activities.  I think we understood Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento would be difficult to match, but imagination could have replaced the dirt on the cobblestones, to create much more of an event than what I witnessed today!

I'm thinking positive about next year, folks!  I forecast an early, wet California winter season.  I hope the gods see it my way and agree.  And, I hope next year, we will have a fully robust return of Gold Rush Days in Old Sacramento for Labor Day Weekend!

Old Sacramento scene
In this scene of Old Sacramento.  You might think that is dirt ramping up to street level.  Alas, it is dead grass, due to the drought.  In normal years, that area would be green!

As part of Americana in Old Sacramento, a few vintage buses were put out on display in front of the History Center.

Hi Myrl, I wondered why they couldn't used hay instead of dirt and put on the show they are famous for. Seems the committee that works on this event would have been smart to have you on board because you can think outside the box.

William - I think there were dozens of activities that could have been provided. Old Sacramento has a history of having amazing reenactors, who could have performed on cobblestone streets, just as easily as in the past.  They simply didn't hit their mark!  That being said, there are still plenty of regular activities in Old Sacramento to enjoy this weekend.  They are the California Railroad Museum, train rides, Hornblower cruises, fine restaurants and cafes.  And the Greek Festival is going on a few blocks away at the Convention Center.

Endre - You are a mere one hour away by air.  And Old Sacramento is along I-5 as you enter Sacramento from the airport.  It would be an easy trip!

Even if Gold Rush Days have to be canceled for a few years, an alternative festival could replace it with planning and participation.  I hope that California recovers soon, but it might take years for the land to recover, let alone your rivers and lakes.  Keeping my fingers crossed for you, too, Myrl!

Oh boy, looks like a great time will still be had by all.  I do understand about the water problem.

Roy - I hope you are enjoying this holiday weekend as well!

Susan - I was thinking about street dancing.  The coblestones might create a bit of a hazard, but they could bring in dancing platforms like they do at some weddings.  Add, some musicians and you're off and running.

Will - There is always a lot to attract visitors to Old Sacramento.  When we are able to have Gold Rush Days, it puts the visit over the top!

Myrl ... When it was announced recently that Stockton was canceling the Asparagus Festival after 29 years, a few days passed and another promoter took up the mantle, moved location and the Festival will not miss a year.  However, there is plenty of time to complete an alternative plan.  As I remember, the Gold Rush Days was canceled without a lot of lead time to create an alternative "event."  The "Americana" seemed to be driven by the desire to capture some of the economic benefit lost - and apparently not a long term substitution.  True, it appears that more thought could have gone into it and more of a "festival" might have added to the allure of a delightful location!

Chris Ann - Old Sacramento always has its charm and allure.

Jack - So true.  There wasn't much lead time.  But, as one Old Sacramento business owner said, "the committee" made the decision to cancel Gold Rush Days, and then made the decision to create Americana in Old Sacramento, and they did so without much input from the business owners.  I suspect the business owners could have provided a lot of insight into creating a truly colorful event.  But, as you say, hopefully, next year we will have something different.

HI Myrl - that is too bad that Gold Rush Days was cancelled and an alternative way to have it could not have been done. The drought is awful this year and is affecting so much of our state. I am with you on the forecast for a heavy, wet winter . . . Lord knows we need it.
