Another year, another sales tax increase in King County.  Last April 1st, the sales tax in King County increased a tenth of a percent to 8.9% to improve bus transportation services.

Effective tomorrow, April 1st, 2008, King County's sales tax will be going up another one-tenth of a percent to 9.0%. This increase will be used for chemical dependency or mental health treatment services.

Taxes for those parts of the county not included in the RTA district will be 8.6%.

I often wonder how much of these "special" taxes actually to go what they're supposed to.

Seattle's mayor is also trying to get an increase in property taxes to fund improvements at the Pike Place Market...to the tune of $75 million.  I'd say, let the market's businesses and tourists pay for the improvements.

A couple of years ago there was a initiative to tax espresso coffee drinks to fund pre-school and day care services. The good citizens rightly voted it down.

The older I get, the more anti-tax I've become.  But, I'm not sure why my purchases should fund someone's chemical dependency treatment, or why my trip to the local coffee joint should subsidize other peoples pre-school expenses, or why owning a home means that I should be responsible for improvements to the Pike Place Market.
