Tucson Botanical Gardens is home to one of the best butterfly houses in the country. Join us for the opening of the 9th season of Butterfly Magic at the new Cox Communications Butterfly and Orchid Pavilion. Marvel and get up-close-and personal with nature’s flying flowers.
The Cox Butterfly & Orchid Pavilion will transform into a magical oasis filled with over 300 butterflies at any given time. All of the butterflies are shipped to Tucson Botanical Gardens in their pupae form and emerge in front of visitor’s eyes in the chrysalis exhibit, before being transferred into the greenhouse. A new shipment of pupae is received almost weekly making the butterfly variety diverse and ever-changing throughout the season!
Dart Frogs have now been added to the Butterfly Magic exhibit and they have become all the rage! As of now, there are 5 different varieties and a total of 25 frogs. Native to Central and South America, Dart (or Arrow) Frogs received their name from Natives using their toxic secretion to poison the tips of blow darts. Their toxicity varies between species and is largely determined by diet and consuming native plants and bugs in Central and South America. The Gardens frogs are bred and live in a contained environment, so they do not carry high levels of toxicity. As with all frogs, if handled a slight burning will occur on the skin and hands should be washed immediately to avoid spreading.
While you may come to marvel at the beauty of the butterflies, be sure to also tour the gorgeous gardens as they are included in the cost of admission to the Cox Butterfly & Orchid Pavilion.
Butterfly Magic is Open 7 days a week, 9:30-3:00 pm beginning October 1st through April 30th
