Here's another 'What If" Social Network Epiphany

Okay, so no sooner had I published my rather lengthy discourse on all things "Twitter," than I get a phone call from the RainMan himself, Jonathan Washburn....

 ~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~

Have you ever seen the movie 'The Majestic" with Jim Carey? It's definitely one of my 'Top Ten' all-time favorite movies. Jim plays the part of a 1940's Hollywood Screenwriter, and in the early part of the movie, all the writers are sitting around brainstorming plot possibilities. One of the writers says,

"Hey! I got a 'What If'....

...meaning, that he's got an idea for how a particular scene plays out.

~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~  o  ~

.......So Jonathan calls, and shares one of his 'What If' moments with me...

"What if an entire real estate office subscribed en masse to Twitter? Every Agent, every Broker, all connected, all communicating, through Twitter? "

Imagine the possibilities... With so many agents working remotely, and office meetings typically taking place only once a week at best, now everyone on your team could communicate and share vital market information as it happens...

Got a new listing? Twitter it! Price Reduction? Twitter it! Broker's Open Invite? Twitter it! Meeting cancelled? Twitter it! Bad accident on the Interstate? Twitter it!

How many social networks can one agent support?

Sounds cool - only thing is,  most of the agents in my office can barely comprehend a blog, let alone Twitter, LinkedIn, Facebook...LOL

The would be cool and if I were a Broker I would implement that! Back in the day I worked at a company that wouldn't allow us to use the office computers to IM each other - lol!! Wonder what they are doing now.

If every agent has a cell phone, it's doable.

Yep.  I tried telling them about Jott.com and was met with blank stares and remarks of "How do you find time to find all this stuff?"

I think that is a great idea, but how many agents in my office of 148 would log on and do it. Maybe 1/8, heck we can't even get many here to attempt it the brightest and the best. Maybe in the year 2020 ?

While it would be cool - and instant - and a great tool - honestly....how many offices do you really think are ready to take the plunge? Considering we see it all from "Blogging/Twitter/Network Expert" to "Refusing to use Email" Agent....? (I swear I'm not making this up!!!)

I can throw the mixed blessing on that...  I'm already thinking I need a public and private Twitter identity.  On the public, I would share information with clients and consumers and others in the market that would be following me.  But there would be no chaff... that would be on the private side, where I'm giving Jessica a hard time, or responding to industry wonk stuff that may not appeal to consumer types...

After all, I'd hate for them to stop following because they are getting half of a wonky conversation and just get bored with it.

I think it would work if agents had an identity just for their office as an office tool.  But would you want to do it that way?  Perhaps that would prevent a very nice side effect -- general public-man sees your post, wants to know what it is about, and finds your office on Twitter.  Could happen, you never know!  (said pouting)

OK, maybe not.  The dual-identity thing could be nice.

In theory it seems like a good thing - but only if it was private, office members only.

Rich - I have to agree with Georgina about how it being private would be a big plus!

Better be an office of one.  Really, if everyone in the office twitted...it'd be just all noise...er, junk twits.  Honestly, I really don't care to hear about another agent's listing, price drop, broker's....unless they're pertinent to my clients' needs/interests.  And, I'll get that from the MLS directly.

Just curious....how many of you are actively involved within your respective office? Attending weekly office meetings? Broker's Tours as an office? Conduct training together? Have socials?

I'm in the office daily as I just can't work from home....too many distractions.  I'm watching the People's Court right now rather than working on my newsletter.  In my defense, I'm addicted to Judge Milian and she's on twice a day!  But, I digress.

I'd say I'm fairly involved with my office. I attend our weekly meetings as well as additional education/training/social events at the office.  Since I'm not drinker, I tend to skip certain off-site social functions.

I tend not to go on the office's tour of agent listings or broker's opens of agents in our office.  I prefer to preview listings on my own, either those within my specialty (condos) or on behalf of my clients.  Otherwise, attending a broker's open just because the agent is in my office, especially if it's a SFH, is a waste of time.

Rich - great post.  This might actually work for most folks in my office since many of us are technologically savvy.  And regarding your question posted 4/10/08 - I'm partially involved within my office.  Although I am more involved with community organizations and such.  I'll occasionally hang out with my fellow Realtors at social events, but most of the time I'm hanging out with the general public.   By the way it was cool to see the "Majestic" reference.  It was filmed in Humboldt County, specifically Ferndale, CA.  I love when the movies come to my hometown :)
