CASA CHAPALA

http://www.casachapala.com/casachapalahome.html

When he was growing up in Central Mexico, Guadalupe “Lupe” Barragan  used to work in the fields of the blue agave plant.  As you may know, that is the base ingredient in tequila.  His restaurant, Casa Chapala, has certainly benefitted from his knowledge of the harvesting, distilling and production of tequila.  Check out this video of Lupe talking about tequila:

There is a tasting room called a “cata” in their second new location that has recently opened in North Austin on Research Blvd.  The original location is downtown on San Jacinto.  In the cata, patrons can taste more than 200 varieties of tequila.  The bar area features chairs made from repurposed barrels and tables for tastings.  During happy hour and special events, Lupe will put on his “Tequila Man” outfit of a harness with 2 dozen shot glasses, lime juices and other mixes so he can serve shots of tequila!

Casa Chapala is known for its lunch buffet and something called “Molcajetes” which are meats and vegetables cooked and served in a volcanic stone mortar and pestle.  And, salsa is made tableside to suit your level of heat.   You’ll find authentic Mexican dishes like Mole Ranchero – tender pork & cactus simmered in a mole made with peppers, spices & masa. The original Molcajetes is made with steak, chicken & chorizo grilled with a blend of sautéed mushrooms, onions and a zesty red salsa served with warm tortillas, sliced avocado and queso fresco.

So, plan on being whisked away this weekend to the heart of Mexico and I’ll bet you hear the sound of Mariachi and hand shaken margaritas…

Hi Dorie -- I agree Mexican food is always a good choice.  As far as tequila -- okay in a margarita but no to a shot -- Casa Chapala looks like a perfect place with great food and terrific ambiance.

Dorie I never acquired a taste for tequila, but Mexican food is one of my weakness, and Casa Chapala sounds like an excellent restaurant to have some.
