Burtonsville, MD, an unincorporated area in Montgomery County, is Silver Spring's neighbor to the East. Its hub is the Route 29 and 198 intersection which is at the center of a major revitalization project. The new Burtonsville Master Plan was adopted in December 2012 with hopes to develop the area into a complete community at its core while also maintaining its more rural character.
The new Burtonsville Town Square has been nearly completed (a Green Turtle will be its newest addition) and retail & restaurants along the 198 have been undergoing a facelift. The Master Plan also calls for a main street, sidewalks and public & green open space to connect the shopping centers with the park & ride, Burtonsville Elementary School, the library and the community center.
A true town center will be a major asset to the community and its residents and support the local Real Estate market. Home buyers moving to Burtonsville benefit from its location and close proximity to major routes and employment centers. More housing is needed - the inventory is limited - the proposed zoning change to allow for mixed use development is a step in the right direction.

Why should you consider buying a home in Burtonsville, Maryland?
I can see the planners' vision and I like it, a lot. The Master Plan will transform the Burtonsville area from just a census-designated place to a community that has a pedestrian-friendly town center with a diverse mix of retail and restaurants, a rural character all around and lots of green space in between.
The concept is nothing new and similar developments can be found in other areas of Montgomery as well as Howard County, MD - the difference is that Burtonsville is more affordable.
