Who fired The Shots That Started The Civil
War
& Where Did It Happen?
You can't possibly go to Charleston, South Carolina and not visit historic Fort Sumter. It was indeed very informative not to mention relaxing boat ride on the Charleston Harbor
The really fantastic thing about our trip to this beautiful, sacred and historic are all the wonderful folks we've had the opportunity to meet on our journey.
Everyone wants to help you. If you look lost or are even acting like you're looking for someplace a perfect stranger will stop and ask you if you need help. These cute kids pointed towards the Fort Sumter Visitor Education Center at Liberty Square (340 Concord St.)
Once on the water and on our way we found a rail on board that we were comfortable leaning on. It's only about a 30 minute cruise to the island and you can see quite a lot on the way.
Even an old WWII warship sitting in it's final resting place. There's really so much rich history here it's too much to take in in six days.
Docking on the pier outside Fort Sumper sent a bit of a shiver up your spine as well as you began to feel the mood change, the quiet reverence and the respect taking hold from everyone on board as they begin to disembark for the tour.
The first thing you see as
you enter the Fortress are
the awesome brick walls
and cannon surrounding
and enveloping you from
all around.
Much of the history of
cannon and mortar
warfare and the first shot
of the Civil War would
begin right on this little
tiny spot and change the
United States of America
forever more.
Lest we forget all the Blood and Treasure this young but most powerful Country in the history of the World as sacrificed during this brief time in our history. These are the times and places that make us stop in our tracks, shed a tear and appreciate all those who fought for our individual beliefs but most importantly our FREEDOM.
This has truly been one of the most inspirational and spiritual experiences of our lives and one we've surely been blessed to have had such an opportunity to partake of. No we're not local Charleston folks by any stretch. But after this journey we definitely feel like we're true AMERICANS!
