Do you remember when a smoke was a smoke?

A Realtor friend of mine called me the other day and was feeling down.  I tried to give my friend my full attention, because I, myself, have had episodes of loneliness and despair.  So, I listened to hours of tear-filled stories which she claimed to be the cause of this deep, dark, depression, but I could not understand the problem,  You see, my friend had met a man.  This man seemed to be her knight in shining armor sent in on a big white horse to rescue her from all of life's pitfalls.  It was not meant to be, however.................

The two lovebirds met at a popular hang-out in Virginia Beach on a cold, damp, windy, foggy evening, while gazing at  the most beautiful sunset either of them claimed to have ever witnessed.  As they looked away for just a moment from the splendor before them, their eyes met and locked.  This had to be destiny...... for they were both gazing at this magnificent site from a place where very few dare to go these days.............  the smoking section, (which ironically turned out to be the fog).  They drank and laughed and smoked for hours.   They spoke of their parents, their childhood, their past loves, their passions, their desires, their hates, their wants, their needs, and the more they drank and smoked, the stronger their love grew for each other, so neither would complain of the harsh conditions in which they were forced to endure due to their habits which were no longer socially acceptable.   Their desire to find a place where they could be together in an enclosed space where they could be free to express their love for nicotine, alcohol and each other at the same time without suffering through the elements of mother nature was on both of their minds.

However, their love was so strong that they were able to endure most of the winter months, drinking and smoking outside in the harsh conditions of Virginia Beach during wind storms, rain, Northeasters, sleet, and the occasional snow shower.  Sadly, the need to be warm and comfortable while holding on to the addiction which eventually would be the demise of their relationship was stronger than their need to be with each other.

Each admitted defeat in the end and the only thing left of what could have been has raised many an eyebrow.  Were they really in love?  What really brought these two addicts together?  Is there a way for them to re-unite?  Is there a place left where two people can enjoy an alcoholic beverage and a cigarette at the same time?  What will become of so many couples like them?  Is this the end of mankind as we know it?  ...........................................................................................................................................................
