What would happen if I ran my business like AT&T runs theirs?
I guess when you are a company as large as AT&T you can play by your own rules. I currently have AT&T for my home internet and TV service. Lately I have been having trouble with one of the TV's not working. It turns out the problem is the AT&T receiver. A call to AT&T led to an attempt to walk me through a manual reboot of the system. This only worked for a while. So now a technician needed to be scheduled to come to my house and try to solve the problem.
Of course this leads to them telling me " The technician will be there sometime between noon and 4 pm." Now if someone called me and asked me if they could see one of my Stanislaus County listings and I told them I will be there sometime between Noon and 1pm (I'm much more precise than AT&T) they would surely tell me no thanks. They would move on to another house and/or another agent.
So I make sure to be home on Monday between the hours of noon and 4 pm. They sent me a text message confirming that they would be here. Surprise surprise, no one shows up. No call, no show! Now imagine if I did that with a prospective Turlock home seller. I tell Ms. Seller that I will meet with her to list her home then just don't show up. I can kiss that listing goodbye!
So today I speak to the AT&T representative to try to get things straightened out. Prior to all of this I spoke to them and was offered an upgrade with more TV channels and faster internet and it was actually going to lower my monthly bill. So I said let's do it. I've been waiting a couple of weeks but is supposed to be done next week. It turns out that since I have this service call (for the upgrade) scheduled already they can not schedule another service call before that one. Like I explained to the man at AT&T, that is a serious flaw with their system. (He agreed) So if I have something scheduled in the future and something breaks before that I am just out of luck! What would happen if I had an appointment to show a buyer a home in Modesto on Saturday but then he called me and asked to see another home in Ceres on Thursday and I told him, sorry since you scheduled your Saturday showing first we have to do that one first? Mr. Buyer would be on the phone to another Realtor and see both homes without me.
So now I have a technician scheduled to come out tomorrow to replace the failed receiver. He is going to try to work around their system and see if he can install the new receiver and get "their system" to actually recognize it. I'm not holding my breath on this one. I guess I could tell a potential seller, sure I'll list your Turlock home but I don't know that I can actually sell it for you. I think that seller would be on the phone to another Realtor pretty fast.
So I guess if you are a huge company like AT&T you can do what you want. The customers are just a nuisance that sometimes get in the way. If I ran my business like AT&T does, I would be OUT of business. I can't, and would never, work that way. Without my buyers and sellers (customers) I have no business. If you call me and want to buy or sell a home I will bend over backwards to schedule appointments and showings that work with your schedule. You won't get AT&T like service from me.
