ActiveRain Point Scoring System Update

Ever since the very beginning of this network, the Point Scoring System has been the source of constant discussion and debate. While many of our members embraced the genius of awarding points for their involvment here, an equal number felt it would lead to a degeneration of the quality of published content, and that 'less-than-ethical' types would game the system, and use it to their advantage.

After considerable and lengthy discussion among our staff, and consulting with many of our veteran members, we have decided to eliminate the point scoring system in its entirety.

This change will go into effect on our next update (late Thursday evening/early Friday morning). This update will remove your individual point totals and the Point Summary function on your 'My Home' page. Additionally, there will no longer be 'Featured' members in each geographical location (city, county, or State) on both the ActiveRain platform or on Localism, based on point score ranking. This will be replaced by a continuous random placement function that will change each day.

We appreciate your continued support and involvement here on ActiveRain. Our special thanks to those who participated in the many rounds of discussion, and helped us to reach this rather difficult decision.

This reminds me of the LSU school article that recently ran. In Baton Rouge LA, a brand new Apple store just open. It is standing room only with customers. It has only been open one month. The article state that Apple was closing due to business. The kids were upset, employee's thought they had lose their jobs. I went to the store looking for a deal, no such thing. Apple is selling products like crazy. April Fools!

I guess as a regular practical joker in our family I usually can smell these a mile away. I still love them though.

OK so you had me for a minute. At first I thought "who cares". Then I thought "oh crap". Then I checked to make sure I still had my facebook account :) Then I siad "Well points don't really matter". Then I took a screen shot of my #3 positioning. Then I read the comments and said "Duh!"

I felt such overwhelming disappointment until I started reading the comments. I was going to ask if you were also going to remove the profiles of persons that created one and have never used it. Wouldn't seem fair to rotate them when they aren't active. I think I feel better now. That was a good one!

Even though this was clearly an April Fool's joke, it does beg the question of the point system being changed. There was once talk of a shared folder system replacing the post rankings, but it hasn't been discussed in a long time. Is it still in the works?

This must be a April Fools joke. The point system is what makes people just starting out want to post and get some sort of recognition. The point system brings credibility to that individual and his / hers expertise. But, if you have to do that so be it.

OK, I log into my computer tonight and have 251 e-mails waiting, 200 were comments on this blog. I've hit unsubscribe 7 times now, to no avail. How the hell do I get out of this nightmare??? I don't even want to think about losing points anymore! I'll be dreaming about it all night.

I didn't read all 239 comments, but I skimmed through and it's even more funny to read the comments of people who thought it was true. Too funny!

Seriously. A change such as this should be considered. Sure there would be more programming necessary and this may be one of the reasons for a simple point system. Services such as Google have made "leaps and bounds" using constantly updated algorithms to rank websites. Something to think about. I look forward to hearing others comments on this topic.

To Whomever it may concern, I'm glad I didn't read this until today. I couldn't have dealt with it on April 1st. I would have believed that it was an April Fools joke.

All I can say is "this wasn't very funny". I was in a horrible accident on Thursday. The other three A/R members who were at the scene, kept things light by joking with me on how many points I would get by posting about the event on A/R. I must say it really helped. I'm so glad I found Active Rain.

reading back through this i realized that active rain needs more of this. Most members are petrified to post anything that may invoke humor as it may merit deletion or several warnings. I for one am a huge fan of lolcats and could see a section setup for that a huge plus to lighten the atmosphere. This may mean less points for those who post in that section but you'll actually create a stronger community as more users start adding content.

I don't know; maybe I have no sense of humor. I think they really intended to get rid of the points system and it was just a coincidence they announced it on April Fool's Day. Then the uproar and mechanics of getting rid of points was too difficult so they blew it off. BUT, question is, if points still exist, how the heck am I supposed to get more? They used to have alot of points for including links to our activerain profile on other websites. Now all the instructions/references to that are gone. Well I have to say that I have just reached 70,000 points which is amazing. I am only about 1000 points away from the featured spot for my province. I have sure enjoyed the journy to get here.
