Originally founded as a resort community in the 1960's by a group called the Cherokee Village Development Co ( later becoming Cooper Communities, Inc), Bella Vista Village became a full fledged city on Nov 7, 2006. Following the change, municipal government replaced the POA. The city has a divided school district. Part of the homes are located in the Bentonville school district and part are in the Gravette School District. Bella Vista has recently opened its first school, Cooper Elementary - part of the Bentonville school district.

Bella Vista has experienced a 60% growth between 2000 and 2010 census. The need for additional roads has increased with the growth. Construcion is underway for the Bella Vista Bypass. This is planned to be a two-lane freeway that will connect both  I-49 and I-540.

Bella Vista has seven lakes. These lakes are restricted to the members of the community or their guest.

. Lake Ann, Lake Windsor, and Lake Loch Lomond are the largest all-sports lakes in the town. Lake Avalon, Lake Norwood, and Lake Rayburn are primarily fishing lakes with "no wake" restrictions. Current POA boat permits are required as are Arkansas fishing licenses, when fishing Bella Vista lakes.
