Okay, I have to admit.  I had went to bed knowing that I had to post this blog this morning and so I was quite tickled when I read on the dashboard this morning that AR had decided there was no longer any point to the points and the powers that be were going to remove them immediately.

When I first came to AR nearly 5 months ago, I hadn't paid any attention to the point system.  I saw I had some, but I didn't know what they were for and honestly didn't care.  I had stumbled upon AR strictly by accident and thought it would be a good place for me to spread word about the radio/podcast show devoted to Professional Home Staging.  This was the target audience that I was needing to reach.

It wasn't until a conversation that I had with Bob Stewart that I even understood the point system and why it was first established.  Again...nice thought and I could see the value, but still, by that point ( pardon the pun) I was already hooked and it didn't matter to me one way or the other.  WHY???

  • FRIENDSHIP:  New friends made and old friends rediscovered.
  • RESOURCES:   From tools I didn't know existed to furniture finds and bargains galore ( Thanks Nora)
  • MARKETING TIPS:  The wealth of information shared is unbelievable!
  • MEME'S:  I now know what a meme is and have truly enjoyed discovering interesting glimpses into the lives of others. ( Thanks Juliana)
  • TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE:  I literally feel as though I've learned more techie stuff from this forum then anything I would have learned from a traditional education in a classroom.  Until just recently, I thought a blog was a medical condition...now I'm blogging with the best of them and in numerous locations.
  • SHOW TOPICS AND GUESTS:  Much of what I have learned has inspired many of the topics I research for the show and thanks to the RAIN, I have had some wonderful guests...Karen Dembsky, Craig Schiller, Nora Marek, Kathy Neilson, Bob Stewart...and the list grows....
  • UNEXPECTED SURPRISES:  In posting about a product, I actually got the warmest greeting from the product's inventors who had some how been told about my blog and actually got to meet one of the partners for lunch.  We have since formed a friendship.
  • STAGE IT FORWARD ROUND TABLE:  The ability to lunch and learn with fellow professional stagers in my area whom I would not have had the pleasure of meeting.
  • LAUGHTER:  On any given day I can turn to the Rain and find myself chuckling over stories of misfortunes, good fortunes, Roosters ( Elaine ), Loo's ( Mary Lou), Staging Antics (Audrey ).etc.
  • EDUCATION:  I truly believe that time spent on active rain is no different then time spent at conferences and seminars ( minus the open bar of course ).  This is no different then any other continuing education course out there.  I have learned so much from so many that I could spend the rest of the day naming those people who have taught me something new or further increased my knowledge on a subject.  From the Real Estate Professionals, to the Marketing Guru's to my fellow Professional Stagers and Designers.
  •  PAY IT FORWARD: I have learned so much and reaped so many rewards, that I in turn have passed along the benefits to others and have witnessed first hand how the Rain has benefited these people as well.  I now enjoy seeing their posts and feeling excited for them when I see that they have been so warmly welcomed.  I speak so much about the Rain that I must appear to be a paid spokesperson.  Which I'm not...but hey...if the job opens...I'm available.  ( ;

For me the points are a gauge to remind me to post and comment. I watch very close how I am ranked on Google and it is funny that even after just two days I start moving down the ranks.

Good Post

Very interesting.  I hadn't read that the points were going to be done away with.

I didn't research how I got them I just enjoyed the knowledge and friendships that I've made along the way.

No longer will I have to worry about my score only being 15K when others, who most likely use professional blogging service, have 200K.

Now onto reading and learning more.

Doing away with the points system has been in the works for quite some time now.  There was just too much controversy associated with the system and I suppose it is easier to be done with it all together.

At least I can fire my professional blogger now and save a few bucks.  Silver lining!

I'm with you, Gina! There was a recent post complaining that some bloggers will write about anything just to get points. I was really taken aback by that concept, because the idea of spewing out blogs without any thought is very foreign to me. And, though I enjoy "earning" something by spending time here, it isn't anywhere close to being the motivating factor! Quite honestly, the amount of points I've accumulated in a short time is a little embarrassing to me! Because, I do work full time, and have a family and home to take care of! I just found out that I have a lot to say!!! ;)

Thanks for putting me in the Laughter category! I would hate the pressure of educating someone!!!

What's a dashboard post???

I fell for this hook, line and sinker.   Of course it's april 1st of course it's April fool's day and did I expect a hoax on a professional blog.  ;-)

not me --- no way.   I'll mark my calendar so that next year I won't fall for anything again.

Virginia...I do believe you had lots of company today from the Active Rain God's posting.  Those silly wabbits!  That's why I was so tickled when I awoke to find that blog on the front page.  It was my intention to post my blog last night but I lost steam and headed to bed.

Just think...you have all year to plot your revenge!

Cheers!

Elaine:  It's obvious you work hard but it's smart that you MARKET hard too...thus the Rain!  Glad you were okay with your listing...it was difficult...lets just say that you educate with laughter...which in my book is the BEST!

Cheers!

Oh Gina, there TRULY IS A REASON FOR POINTS!  When someone reaches the 10,000 point mark, they earn one of the knitted toilet seat covers!  We are all looking forward to that day and strive to gain points.  I am knitting feverishly to get several done!

Gina, I got here too late to be fooled by the point system banishment mention. (We pulled off a simple yet massive joke on my hubby today -- it took hours.) But, it is great to see that you are among those of us who think that being in the Rain is worth the extra cost of caffeine filled drinks, fewer and fewer hours of sleep time as well as the time it takes to tell our families that we are indeed working even though we are laughing out loud or crying or simply tap tap tapping those keys. What do we care if our families know our faces or not, our friends in the Rain have things to teach me, things to comfort me, things to remind me and things to say which make me spew my iced tea all over the place. What a ride!

Yvonne~  I can't tell you how many times I have shared things that I have learned in the Rain with my close group of fellow decorators/stagers.  They don't even ask me anymore where I gained that information.  They haven't quite grasped the blogging thing yet so I just " blog it forward ".

Cheers!
