Gaithersburg Residents Invited to Have Coffee with a Cop

In partnership with the Starbucks at 121 Market Street in Kentlands, the Gaithersburg Police Department will be hosting Coffee with a Cop on Tuesday, September 30, 2014, from 7 to 9 a.m.  Coffee with a Cop provides a unique opportunity for community members to ask questions and learn more about the department’s work in Gaithersburg’s neighborhoods.

The majority of contact law enforcement officers have with the public tends to occur during emergencies or emotional situations, which are often not the most conducive for relationship building with the community. Additionally, some community members may feel that officers are not approachable on the street. Coffee with a Cop breaks down barriers and allows for relaxed, one-on-one interaction.

“We hope that community members will feel comfortable to ask questions, bring forward concerns, or simply get to know our officers,” said Chief of Police, Mark P. Sroka. “These interactions are the foundation of community partnerships.”

Coffee with a Cop is a national initiative supported by The United States Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services. Similar events are being held across the country, as local police departments strive to make lasting connections with the communities they serve.

The program aims to advance the practice of community policing through improving relationships between police officers and community members, one cup of coffee at a time.

Hi Roy, This makes cops seem so much more approachable. Now I want to go get a cup of coffee and start my day.

This is a great idea for an event! I know I feel a little intimidated when in the presence of law enforcement and I am pretty on the straight and narrow. Can one bring children?

This is a great program, our area just started it last month. Community policing is very important and i hope it is expanded everywhere.

Good morning, Roy...law enforcement is such an important part of every community and there should be an understanding of what they do and how very dangerous every day is for each of them.... one of my grandsons is now a deputy sheriff in our county and one will be going to college next year to major in criminal justice....

This is such a good idea. It's important that the community feel that law enforcement is approachable.

Real estate offices could easily sponsor Coffee with a Cop events.

Roy & Delores: This sounds like a well-thought out program and only positives can come from law enforcement interacting in a positive environment. I am so tired of the social media blogs portraying law enforcement as adversaries.

Hi Roy -- this is a great opportunity for both law enforcement and community residents to share ideas --- many areas in my market have these types of events on a regular basis.

Sounds like a very interesting event, Roy.  Though, I'm surprised it's at Starbucks and not at Dunkin Donuts.

This is so interesting, cops hosting events like this in Starbucks (this is free ad for you, SB!). All communities should adopt this idea, it is a great way to engage people in things concerning the community security.
