Bite a Pencil, Live a Longer Life

Smiling is good for your healthAt the Tennessee Association of REALTORS® Annual Convention we had a speaker, Darryl Davis that spoke about smiling. He was an energetic speaker and had so many good ideas and points to share. He talked about how people prefer to be around people that are smiling and how contagious a smile can be. So true! It can change the attitude in a whole room.

There have been many studies done about smiling and how it is good for your health and mental attitude. It also makes you more attractive and more approachable. One study found that when you smile chemicals are released in the body that are actually good for you. You get a D.O.S.E. of good medicine that improves your life. That dose is a release of chemicals called Dopamine, Oxytocin, Serotonin and Endorphins. These help lower stress, lower your blood pressure, boost your immune system and the study also said that people that smile a lot actually live a longer life.

There are many muscles in the face that are used when smiling. The study found that when you put a pencil across your mouth and bite down that many of the same muscles are used that you use in smiling. The body interprets this as a smile and the same chemicals are released in the body so you are getting a D.O.S.E. of good medicine.

If it is hard for you to smile on your own, try practicing on a pencil. Your body won't know the difference and you will get the health benefits. Then try it on your own without the pencil and see if you still feel a lift.

Bite a Pencil, Live a Longer Life.

Things learned at the 2014 TAR Annual Convention.
