Anti-social Media postings.

By
Real Estate Broker/Owner with Richard Weisser Realty

Anti-social Media postings by Richard WeisserI used to enjoy the company of others. Whether eating at a nice restaurant, relaxing at a local park, or during the duration of a long car ride, it’s nice to have intimate interaction with others of our species.

But there can be no expectation of intimacy these days. And one cannot assume that their privacy will be respected in this age of anti-social media.

Because every gathering now can include hundreds or even thousands of uninvited guests that are made privy to both your location and the nature of your business.

If one wants to reveal every intimate detail about their day to day affairs that is fine by me. That is their choice and more power to them.

But to drag me or anyone else in as an unwilling accomplice seems to be going too far. I often do not wish for people to know where I am or whom I am with. I may be an old fuddy-duddy but that’s me!

So here’s my question:

Wouldn’t it be proper for someone to ask first if it’s OK to post another person’s image or whereabouts “on the fly?”

Good morning, Richard Weisser to post an image without permission is not a classy thing to do and to mention where that person is at the time is a total invasion of privacy.....

It would seem to be a matter of courtesy.   But courtesy is lacking in many areas these days! Of course the old line is there is no expectation of privacy when in public!

Privacy is time/space owned

Invading another's privacy is an invasion of their space

Might just as well take their wallet and look at their "papers".

Wait!!  This is the United States of America where privacy is powerful.

Sadly, our space is receding daily.

I generally ask the person if they mind if I post something to my social media. Usually, they don't mind. If they do, I honor their wishes. It's just common courtesy.

Good morning Rich. I couldn't agree with you more. I am offended by so much in technology today, but nothing more than folks who feel they can include me in their postings.

I keep my Facebook settings where nobody can tag me without my permission.  In this day and age, privacy is much more limited.  Just a sign of the times.

I have warned my boys that they need to be very careful about what they do. (Hopefully, they already understand to not do stupid/illegal stuff, but...) Anyway, I have told them that anything they think they are doing anonymously in this day is NOT. Your 'friends', passerby, etc might be videoing or taking pictures and posting for all the world to see!

I agree that it would be proper but that will not change a darn thing... Things are changing and all we can do is stay under the radar...My opinion...

Richard,

In our circle we do not use our phones during dinner, unless one of us chokes and needs EMS, or has a sick child.  I agree with you, a degree of protocol is important.  A

I remember getting into the FourSquare thing where the rage was location based services and being a mayor. This segued into posting every place you go with everyone you know. Then the selfie craze and folks I hate to tell you this but you aren't that fascinating and neither am I. So leave me out of the picture.
