Is it worth the time and money to scrape the popcorn ceilings to sell a$150,000 house?

That depends on several factors. The biggest of those being is that the only thing “wrong” with the home you are trying to sell? Is everything else is good: solid surface counter-tops, updated appliances, new flooring, fresh paint, updated fixtures, professional staging, landscaping?

The other factor is what is the norm for the neighborhood? Have most homeowners converted to smooth ceilings? If so, you need to do it. You need to check out you competition- do they have smooth ceilings? Then you need them too. If they do not have smooth ceilings that may be the one thing that really gives you an edge.

In this market every detail is important, but you may need to focus on some other items first and then see if your budget will allow for smooth ceilings.

Popcorn ceilings have got to go.  It's easier than most think to replace. A little messy but it can make all the difference in an update.

Andy,

I had a client that redid the Popcorn ceilings.  They had a system for removing that finish that was fast and effective.  They sprayed a small area with a mister bottle, scraped it into an office size trash can and moved to the next section.  I was so surprised at how fast they could do a room.
