Villages In Newton, MA 02458, are there 13 or are there less?  Newton is a town that is made up of a variety of smaller villages with very distinct characteristics.  In some cases the bounderies are blurred.  Newton is located just 6-8 miles from downtown Boston depending on where you are in the village and where you are going into Boston. That is not a long trip and public transportation is readily available.  People live in Newton because it has been ranked as one of the top towns in the country on numerous occasions.  In fact right now, it was just named as the top town in the US to live in by 24/7 Wall Street.  People gravitate to Newton since the days it separated from Cambridge and became it's own community. From wikipedia we have, Newton was settled in 1630 as part of "the newe towne", which became Cambridge in 1638; it became its own town in 1688. There are several historical sites of interest in the Newton area.

114 Shornecliffe Road, Newton MaIt is a community of great schools and because of the large family population there are two noted public high schools in Newton.  While it matters a lot to those who live in the town, bot schools are often ranked among the top schools systems in the state.  The people of Newton know that education is important.

This from Newton Citizens

"Newton is made up of a dozen or so villages, the boundaries of which are so obscure that one may move about the city without ever noticing the passage from one village to the next."
-- Elsie M. Husher(1)

When I moved to Newton, I was given a City-produced booklet (2) which enumerated 14 villages, however, Stephen Gartrell at the Planning Department says there are only 13:
Auburndale, Chestnut Hill. Lower Falls, Newton Centre, Newton Corner, Newton Highlands, Newtonville. Nonantum, Oak Hill, Thompsonville, Upper Falls, Waban, West Newton

On the other hand, in 1930, the Clerk of the city Board of Assessors only enumerated 11, with Newton Corner, Thompsonville, and Oak Hill missing (3), while the Newton Village Study, a substantive examination of the villages, got the count back up to 14 by adding "Four Corners", which is a neighborhood.
