When the phone rang, it was my daughter's cell. I was still in my PJ's and about ready to hop in the shower to get ready for work. The kids had left for school and it was picture day. I thought when I saw it was her... "what did she forget?" because we'd spent a lot of time that morning with both her and Colin with choosing what to wear for their photos.
The call started calmly with "I'm okay, but" and then the she burst into tears and said she'd had a wreck followed by the words "and it was bad". I actually just put on sweats on top of my pj's and left to get there just in time to see our children being loaded into an ambulance. I got to speak to them and I had called my mom to immediately leave for the hospital. I ran home and got clothes and shoes (yes I had actually left to go check on my children without shoes)
Both kids were released from the hospital that day. Colin had a cast for 6 weeks with a broken foot and Abigail had two surgeries, one two days after the accident to put her thumb back together and another 14 months later to removed the plate and screws because the screws started to back out on their own.
The car was a Volkswagon Passat, it held up very well and the side air bag likely saved Colin from much worse injuries. It just dawned on me that it has been 9 years since this accident. It was Abigail's senior year, her first car. Why did I share this? Well, because I want to tell you to spend a little more and buy your kids a safe car. This Passat had a metal beam down the side and as bad as it looks, Colin who was in the front passenger seat just had a broken foot.
