Kitchen Remodeling Step 4

Each remodeling, updating project has its own parts...some may not include every step we have discussed in this plan and you may choose to work with elements you already have and work with them in your new plan.  In this step, we are looking at what we call the "hardscape" of your plan...the things that are most durable and may require more thought in choices.

   - Countertops - There are a variety of choices for this material and you should be aware not only of how they look, but their properties in terms their care  - how porous they may be, sealing required, etc. Different parts of tcountertop materialshe country mean different materials may be popular including ceramic tile, concrete, stainless steel, marble, granite, quartz and a variety of manmade materials including laminates.   If you are replacing countertops, give thought to the cabinetry underneath. Replacing only the counter and not the cabinet may give you a half finished look and destroy the tone of the whole project.

- Flooring This also has many options to consider - a variety of wood floors from the dark, rich tones to Brazilian cherry to lighter shades of oak or bamboo,  ceramic tile is a popular choice and pets may make a laminate material a better choice.  There are newer additions to this category we are terming "specialty flooring" which include materials like Flooring samplesrubber, concrete and cork.  This is not something you are likely to change often...research the area and decide what works best for you in terms of not only the look, but care and durability as well.

- Lighting The choices here are many as well and you may choose recessed lighting, larger fixtures over islands, snack bars or tables, dramatic chandeliers, pendant lighting or some combination in different areas of the room.kitchen chandelier You may consider under cabinet lighting as a welcome addition to your new room. While you are analyzing light...don't forget natural light...does your design make the most of natural light...is this the time to add or replace a window ? Let your imagination soar and your budget dictate the possibilities for your new design.

Remodeling projects can be exciting and we encourage you to take time to research materials, contractors, designers to arrive at the best combination of options you will enjoy when your project is complete.

If you missed, Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3...click on them for a remodeling review.

Sally & David: With the winter months soon to arrive, these interior improvement project make perfect sense and they do add value if not overdone, and overspent.

We close on our home October 6 and the wife is in panic mode to find a hoe.  She said she walked into the last home we saw and while it did not have the WOW factor she wanted to make an offer.  Now she's not happy with me because she said I talked her out of it.  Women... still don't understand her after 45 years.

Hi Sally.  The most important step is your budget.  Decide on that first.

Yes and no Conrad....often people have idea what things cost...and determining what each steps costs may determine which steps you take. Deciding on a number without knowing what it will buy or not buy may mean a different choice or two...painting cabinets not replacing them etc

I learned the other day from an exotic bird photographer that harvesting for granite is not great for the environment.

Know that the series will continue as "live and in person" we go from one kitchen to another.  There are people who like granite....it is more porous and for us, the patterns are too "busy."
