Austin TX City Residents ~ City Council Votes on Transportation Networks
The City Council voted 6-1 in a meeting that extended past midnight September 25, 2014 on the “first reading” to give initial approval to regulations to allow Transportation Network Companies to operate legally in Austin, TX. The Council has the opportunity to amend the proposed regulations before taking a final vote at a future meeting. They gave the plan preliminary approval, but two more votes are expected next week.
Austin has been in the throes of expansion and many residents have turned to ridesharing apps to fill their transportation needs despite an official ban. Transportation Network Companies operating in Austin have been doing so illegally and have been for months.
Uber and Lyft are companies already in Austin operating and are anxious to legally operate to be of service to the masses that descend on Austin for our various events and to be used as an alternative mode of transportation on a daily basis.
There is plenty of discussion on the topic of opening the doors to a new industry without integrating the taxi industry. The taxi industry is up in arms with the competition of allowing alternative options for transportation.
ATX Safer Streets say they want to see ridesharing legalized in Austin so they can provide a much needed service by helping people obtain a ride home after a night out on the town.
Some feel the taxi industry needs to step up their game in providing better quality service. These new industries popping up are the “Ultimate Form of High Tech Capitalism!” It looks like we'll be seeing more innovative high tech ideas emerging in our marketplace. Once again Austin is in the news……too bad we can’t address and adopt new roads to alleviate traffic congestion faster!
