How Did That Pocket Door Repair Turn Out?

A pocket door is installed when a traditional door and its swing would be an obstruction. These hidden doors can be a great way to have privacy without the door being in the way while in the open position. You may have one in your home in Sacramento. There are some things about the pocket door that may be troublesome though.

Since there are parts to the door that can not be gotten to easily if there is a malfunction, the repair may take some extra effort to correct. The pocket door rides on a track that is double the size of the door. One half is above the opening, the second half is inside the wall. You can imagine what it would be like if there is a problem inside the wall. But the door can be fixed if a contractor knows how to repair a pocket door.

In the photo, you can see that it is important to hire someone with experience. Though the door is new and appears to be working, there is still some minor problems to be corrected. The pocket door needs to have a latch and handle that stays inside the door. A handle that sticks out will hit the door frame causing the door to not fully open. As you can see the handles will continue to hit the frame, bending the knobs and probably damage the track inside the wall.

Finding a contractor in Sacramento who can repair or replace a pocket door may be the best solution to this problem.

I'm pretty sure the reason for the "pocket" is it doesn't stick out like that  LOLLL

I love pocket doors and when I did a rehab a couple years ago we used them quite extensively in this little house to create  and maintain space and our hardware was out of the way, unlike this door!!

Pocket look in a home . . . .  and can save space . . . . And they take an extra to repair them . . . . but worth it.

Good luck and success.

Ha I've never seen a pocket door with a knob before...definitely need someone that knows what they're doing to clean that up.  I had a pocket door in my last home and it was very convenient.

Hi Tom, I am not a fan of these doors for several reasons. The track used in many of the track homes where these appear is very thin, requiring a hollow core door that is light weight. They tend to warp and it takes very little until the nails used on the framing protrude and scratch the door. Some are scared and can not be repaired.

I grew up in a home that was over 150 years old and we had a pair of large 2 inch thick, 10 foot high doors dividing the dining room off from the living room. When they were removed in a remodel, they had little in common with the cheap approach used today.

Maybe they left the door knobs on, in lieu of a pocket door pull, to save money! Unbelieveable!

Tom, I've had pocket doors in a couple of houses and they were great, I never thought about the problems you pointed out and thankfully my contractors didn't put a door know on them!

I always learn so much from these posts, not that I would be able to do such repairs myself, but at least I get an idea of how things should be done!

Tom,

We rarely put pocket doors in our homes for that very reason! I think we are one of the only David Weekley subdivisions that does put them in!

The pocket door can be very useful and it's design helpful in opening space in the home. It is important to know how to repair and maintain this type of door.
